Men's Golf Improves By Three Strokes At Battle At The Beach

Feb. 14, 2011
NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - The Oregon State men's golf team improved its score by three strokes on Monday and moved up one spot to ninth place at the 2nd Annual Battle at the Beach.
Junior Casey King shot a 1-under 69 to lead the Beavers, which shot a 12-over 362, at the par-70, 6,900-yard Ocean North Course at The Resort at Pelican Hill. Oregon State had a 15-over 365 on Sunday at the three-day, 54-hole tournament.
"Casey played great in just his second round in a tournament this year," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It's good to see that we can get someone at the bottom of the lineup to shoot under par. Hopefully, Casey is someone we can continue to rely on in the future.
"We played decently under tougher conditions today," Reehoorn added. "The golf course played more difficult today. The hole locations were tough, the greens were quicker and the scores were much higher for everyone. We had a few shots there that we gave away, but overall I was pleased with how we played."
Junior Alex Moore fired an even-par 70 and is tied for 22nd overall with King, while freshman David Fink shot a 2-over 72 for the second straight day and sophomore Nick Sherwood improved his second round by seven strokes with a 3-over 73.
"Alex got off to a tough start, but he kept fighting and battling and hung in there," Reehoorn said." We've been struggling with our finishes and it was good to see us do a better job of that today."
San Diego continues to lead the 13-team tournament with a 1-over 348-353--701, while Washington sits in second with a 3-over 351-352--703 and UCLA is in third with a 6-over 353-353--706.
The tournament concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
"This format, with six-counts-five, gives us the opportunity to move up the leader board if we get everyone to play well," Reehoorn said.
