Men's Golf Completes First Round At Battle At The Beach

NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - The Oregon State men's golf team sits in 10th place after the first round at the 2nd Annual Battle at the Beach being held Sunday through Tuesday.
The Beavers shot a 15-over 365 at the par-70, 6,900-yard Ocean North Course at The Resort at Pelican Hill. San Diego was the only team to shoot under par among the 13 teams in the field, finishing with a 2-under 348. Augusta State shot an even-par 350, while Arizona State and Washington both fired a 1-over 351 to round out the top four.
"Today we got off to a pretty rock start and battled back but kind of gave it back at the end," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "As a team, we just need to do a better job of coming out and being committed to what we want to do and no worry about what's around us or the trouble we may find. We need to be committed to our shots and pick our targets and just go with it. We also have a lot of work to do in terms of putting and controlling our speed."
Junior Jonnie Motomochi led the Beavers with a 1-over 71 and is tied for 27th overall, while freshman David Fink shot a 2-over 72 for a tie for 37th and junior Alex Moore is tied for 44th with a 3-over 73. Junior Casey King finished with a 4-over 74 in his first tournament of the year.
"I told the team we have nothing to lose," Reehoorn said. "We need to come out ready to go and show everybody that we are a good team. With four of the five guys from last year no longer here, we are a young team and we need to keep doing what we've been doing and working on and have a belief that we can do it."
The three-day, 54-hole tournament continues Monday with tee times beginning at 7 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
