Magdalena Modelska continued her climb in collegiate coaching when she was named Oregon State's assistant coach prior to the 2001-02 season. Modelska, a former Beaver backstroker, served as OSU's volunteer assistant coach during the 2000-01 season.
"It's exciting to see this team from a new point of view," Modelska said of coaching in the same program for which she competed. "It's a growing experience."
While swimming for OSU, Modelska earned spots on the Beavers' all-time top-10 lists in the 100 and 200 backstrokes and the 400 individual medley. Her 3 dual meet wins in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes in 2000 put her among OSU's single-season Pac-10-era leaders.
As a coach, Modelska helped the Beavers match their best-ever Pac-10 finish in 2002 and 2004 with seventh-place finishes and aided in OSU's best-ever NCAA finishes of 31st in 2002, a tie for 25th in 2003 and 20th in 2004.
A native of Mielec, Poland, Modelska brings a wealth of swimming knowledge to OSU.
"Magda is fast becoming one of the bright young coaches in the Pac-10," OSU head coach Larry Liebowitz said. "During the time between head coaches (after former coach Mariusz Podkoscielny left and before Liebowitz was hired), she did a terrific job of keeping the program progressing in the right direction. That was a key to what we were able to do in 2004, and it's a great testament to her abilities as a coach."
Modelska earned her bachelor's degree in English at Oregon State and is currently working toward her master's degree. She swam at OSU for one season after transferring from Indian River (Fla.) Community College. In Poland, she attended Zsoms High in Raciborz. Modelska enjoys downhill skiing.
