PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE: (1990-91)--Jim got his coaching start under Dennis Erickson at the University of Miami as a graduate assistant in 1990. Jim worked with the defensive line and special teams during his tenure at Miami. (1992-98)--Jim moved to Montana State University on February, 1992, as offensive line coach under Coach Cliff Hysell. In addition to coaching the offensive line, Jim also oversaw the tight ends. Jim was coordinator of the running game and pass protections for the Bobcats. (1999)--Jim joined the Oregon State staff under Dennis Erickson to coach special teams and tight ends and assist Gregg Smith on the offensive line.
PREP ATHLETIC RECORD: Attended Port Angeles High School in Port Angeles, WA. Lettered three years as a tight end and defensive end for Coach Curt Bagby. Also earned three letters in basketball. He was top rebounder on the basketball team his sophomore year. Football team was 7-2 his sophomore year, 4-5 his junior season and 7-2 his senior year. Jim was named second team all-league at tight end as a junior and he also started at linebacker. He was honorable mention all-league in basketball as a junior. He was a first-team All-Olympic League pick as a tight end and defensive end his senior year and captain of the basketball team that won the league title. He was selected to the all-tournament team in basketball as a senior. He caught 35 passes for 502 yards and 2 touchdowns as a senior. He won team’s outstanding lineman award and was named team captain.
COLLEGE ATHLETIC RECORD: Attended Washington State University where he earned three letters as an offensive guard. He red-shirted in 1984 and did not play as a freshman in 1985 after switching to guard from tight end. Played as a backup as a sophomore in 1986. With the arrival of Dennis Erickson as head coach, Jim started at left guard his junior year and at guick guard his senior year. He played for offensive line coach Gregg Smith, who he will be assisting at Oregon State. He was selected as WSU’s offensive lineman of the year after his junior year. He was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection as a senior and named honorable mention All-America by the Sporting News. Played on Cougars 1988 Aloha Bowl team that defeated Houston 24-22.
PROFESSIONAL ATHLETIC RECORD: Jim signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Cardinals in 1989.
EDUCATION: Attended Port Angeles High School in Port Angeles, WA, graduating in 1984. He was sophomore class president at Port Angeles and was an honor student for three years, graduating with a 3.2 GPA. Attended Washington State University and graduated with a B.A. in social sciences in 1988 and added a B.A. in education in 1989.
PERSONAL: Jim is married to the former Jen Streatfield, who served as an assistant volleyball coach at Montana State under former Oregon State head coach Dave Gantt. Jim and Jen have one son, Maxwell James (4/7/99)
RECRUITING AREA: Washington, Idaho, Sacramento, Stockton and Northern California.
NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Jim was an anchor on a WSU offensive line his senior year (1988) that ranked third in the nation in total offense and came within 47 yards of breaking the Pac-10 Conference record for a season. WSU generated 5,899 yards in 12 games, an average of over 491 per game. The Cougars rushed for over 213 yards per outing. He was an assistant at the University of Miami when the Hurricanes won the 1991 national championship with a 12-0 record.
