PERSONAL--(pronounced Toe-lay Tall-uh-tu-een-ah) Born 8/11/76 in Kahuku, Hawaii...son of Fivivini and Violeta Talataina...his father is a carpenter and his mother is a cashier...has five brothers and sisters, Lesi, 22; Charlie, 17; B.J., 16; Faleala, 15; and Wendy, 13...Toalei is in the College of Health and Human Performance and is an exercise and sports science major...selected OSU because, "of the safe environment, just like my hometown of Laie and the friendly people."
OSU--(1999-Senior)--With the graduation of Inoke Breckterfield and Jamil Braithwaite, Toalei entered spring drills as the most experienced defensive end on the OSU roster...has played in 29 games and started one, Nevada in 1998...has 77 career defensive points, including 11 solo tackles, 16 assisted tackles, 2 tackles for loss and a sack...entered spring drills listed No. 1 at right defensive end and had an outstanding spring, establishing himself as a solid starter...his overall game has improved a great deal...has great quickness and strength...outstanding pass rusher...posted 5 tackles for Black squad in final spring game at Hillsboro on May 1...in the weight room, Toalei has produced personal bests of 285 pounds in the hang clean, 390 in the bench press, 450 in the back squat and 350 in the incline...has a vertical jump best of 27.50 inches.
(1998--Junior)--Toalei rejoined the Beaver football team in fall camp after returning from a two-year Mormon mission...was listed on the depth chart at defensive tackle in the preseason depth chart but was moved to defensive end on his arrival to camp...he was totally new to Mike Riley's OSU coaching staff, so they needed to see him in person and on the field to evaluate his abilities...he had played in a total of 18 games before departing on his Mormon mission...he opened the season at No. 2 on the depth chart at left end, playing behind Inoke Breckterfield...however, Inoke was suspended for the season opener against Nevada for disciplinary reasons, leaving the door open for Toalei...Toalei took advantage of his opportunity with a sensational game against Nevada (9/5)...Toalei had a defensive lineman's dream, scoring not one, but two touchdowns against the Wolf Pack...in the second quarter, Jamil Braithwaite blocked a Nevada punt and Toalei picked up the ball at the Nevada 3-yard line and carried it over for his first touchdown...in the fourth quarter, Bryan Jones forced Nevada quarterback Erik Stidham to fumble and, once again, Toalei was in the right spot and picked up the fumble and raced 60 yards for his second touchdown...Toalei was nominated for Pac-10 defensive Player of the Week, but did not win the honor...Toalei had 24 defensive points in the Nevada game as he also contributed a sack and tackle for loss...for the season, Toalei produced 55 defensive points while backing up Breckterfield the next 10 games...had 6 solo tackles, 9 assisted tackles, 2 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.
(1995--Sophomore)--Toalei played in all 11 games and a total of 170 plays as a backup linebacker...accounted for a total of 12 defensive points on 6 tackles...reported to spring practice in 1995 listed No. 3 at outside strong linebacker...after a solid spring practice, he completed the spring by being elevated to No. 1 at weak outside linebacker...Toalei lost his spot at No. 1 at weak linebacker during preseason and played the 1995 season as a backup linebacker...following the 1995 season, Toalei left OSU to complete his two-year Mormon Mission.
(1994--Freshman)--Toalei was one of three true freshmen who played for OSU in 1994...Toalei saw action in seven games and participated in 33 plays, mainly on special teams...he produced 10 defensive points.
KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL--(1991-93)--Toalei ran the 40 in 4.7 in high school...played for Coach Douglas Semones and the Kahuku High School Raiders in the OIA Conference...Toalei was a two-year starter for Kahuku...as a junior, he started at offensive guard...as a senior, he started at offensive guard and defensive end and was the only two-way starter on the squad...also was a two-year letterman in track and field, competing in the shot put and discus...he was team captain and was named first-team all-state on offense and honorable mention all-state on defense...also was a first-team all-league selection on defense...as a junior, Toalei was honorable mention all-league on offense...selected to play in the Goodwill Football Classic All-Star game in Honolulu following the 1993 season...was named his team's MVP as a senior and also won the team academic award...selected to the Samoan first-team all-star team, a team composed of Samoan prep athletes all over the United State...Coach Semones said, "Toalei is a real success story. He established his goals and reached them as an athlete and student. He dedicated himself in the weight room and in the classroom. He got a perfect 4.0 in the first quarter of his senior year. He also is a real leader."...he selected OSU over Hawaii.
