PERSONAL--Born 8/19/79 in New York, N.Y...son of Bennie and Marie Johnson...his father is a salesman and his mother is in the U.S. Coast Guard...enrolled in College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major and plans to become a computer programmer...enjoys computers, music and other sports...Lawrence Taylor is his favorite athlete...playing for the JUCO national title and California state title two years in a row has been his top athletic thrill to date...he has one younger brother, Justin, 16...he received an achievement honor for community service work when he was in high school...selected OSU because, "This program is on the rise and I wanted to be here when we win the Pac-10 title."
OSU--(2000-Senior)--Bennie enters his senior year having played in 12 games with two starts...he served as the backup tight end to Marty Maurer in 1999 and his role will be the same again in 2000...he is a very valuable backup tight end...he is not equal to Maurer as a receiving tight end, but he is a solid blocker and he will catch the football...he has added 10 pounds since his junior season which should help his blocking...in winter conditioning he posted weightlifting bests of 380 in the back squat, 345 in the bench press and 253 in the power clean...he has 4 career catches for 21 yards.
OSU-(1999-Junior)--Bennie enrolled at OSU for the start of winter quarter and participated in spring drills...started the spring at No. 3 on the depth chart and completed the spring at No. 2 on the depth chart at tight end...Bennie proved to be a good blocker and receiver during the spring and will definitely help the Beavers in 1999...in the weight room, Bennie produced personal bests of 215 in the hang clean, 310 in the bench press, 340 in the back squat and 280 in the incline...has a vertical jump best of 23.50 inches.
CITY COLLEGE OF SAN FRANCISCO--Named J.C. Grid-Wire honorable mention All-America in 1998 at tight end, as well as first-team all-conference (Golden Gate Conference) ...played for Coach George Rush at CCSF and was a two-year starter...he caught 26 passes for 425 yards in two years at CCSF...caught 13 passes for 300 yards (23.1 average) and 1 touchdown as a freshman with a long gain of 50 yards...caught 13 passes for 125 yards (9.6 average) and 1 touchdown as a sophomore with a long gain of 35 yards...Bennie started 24 games for CCSF and CCSF was 22-2 during his two years with the program... "He was the key blocker in our running game for two years," said Rush. "Kevin Brown, who led the Pac-10 in rushing last year at Washington State, gained over 1,800 yards for us in 1997 and at least 1,000 of those were behind Bennie. He has excellent hands and is very bright," said Rush...the CCSF Rams was ranked No. 2 among California community college teams in 1998 with a 11-1 record after dropping the state championship game to Palomar College 30-21.
MARIN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL--Bennie earned two letters in football and basketball and one in track and field at Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield, CA...he played tight end on offense and defensive end...named second-team all-league (MCAL) on offense and first team on defense as a senior, and first team All-Bay Area on defense, while playing for Coach Mark Hearing...he caught 23 passes for 200 yards and 1 touchdown as a prep...had 14 quarterback sacks in two years as a defensive end.
