PERSONAL—Born 12/21/80 in Portland, OR...son of David Rothwell Sr. and Margaret Hudson...he has an older brother, David Jr., 23, who plays football for Pomona-Pitzer College...entered OSU with a 3.4 GPA...honor roll student at Lake Oswego through his entire high school career...he is in the College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major...Bruce Smith and Reggie White are his favorite athletes...enjoys golf...selected OSU because, “I like the campus, coaches and the program.”
OSU—(2003—Senior)—Dan enters his senior year having played in a total of 14 games for Oregon State...he is a two-year letterwinner heading into his senior season... he has accounted for a total of 82 defensive points in his OSU career to date...he has 16 tackles (nine solo), two sacks, six tackles for loss, a caused fumble and one pass broken up...Dan missed the entire 2002 season as a result of knee surgery after being injured in fall camp...he had earned the No. 1 spot at left end as a result of his impressive play during spring drills...the injury was a major setback to Dan and the Beavers...he worked extremely hard in winter conditioning and got himself ready for spring drills...he headed into spring drills looking at a different situation than in 2002...Noah Happe and Bill Swancutt, OSU’s starters at defensive end during the 2002 campaign, both had outstanding seasons and Rothwell was unable to reclaim the No. 1 spot at left end...Dan played very well during the spring and his knee held up to all activity...Dan was also heavily involved in special teams during the spring as the Beavers’ No. 1 long snapper and short snapper for PAT attempts...Dan has posted weightlifting bests of 450 in the back squat, 345 in the bench press, 308.6 in the power clean and 352.7 in the push press...he has a vertical jump best of 28.5 inches.
(2002—Junior)—Dan had high hopes going into the 2002 season as he had played his way to No. 1 on the depth chart at left end as a result of his play in spring drills...Dan’s season unfortunately came to a halt in fall camp...Dan suffered an ACL and MCL tear in his left knee on August 20 and later had total reconstructive surgery on the knee on August 27 to repair the ACL...the injury forced him to miss the entire 2002 season and he had already used his redshirt season...the injury was a big blow to Dan and to Oregon State...he entered spring drills listed No. 2 on the depth chart behind Noah Happe at left end...he played his way into the No. 1 spot at right end with a solid spring effort...during winter conditioning, Dan posted weightlifting bests of 435 in the back squat, 325 in the bench press, 287 in the power clean and 330 in the push press...his top vertical jump mark was 27 inches.
(2001—Sophomore)—Dan played in 10 games as a backup defensive end during the 2001 season...he did not play against Oregon...Dan also played on special teams during the 2001 season...he produced a total of 77 defensive points during the season which ranked 12th among Beaver defensive players...he had 13 tackles (eight solo), two quarterback sacks, six tackles for loss, one caused fumble and one pass broken up...he failed to score any defensive points at Fresno State and New Mexico State...he came back with 14 points vs. UCLA with two tackles and two tackles for loss...added 14 points at Washington State on two tackles and a sack...had a career-high 29 points vs. Arizona with two tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a caused fumble...scored 11 points at ASU with two tackles and a tackle for loss...had one tackle vs. California...he was blanked at USC and at home against Washington and did not play at Oregon…he opened spring drills listed No. 1 on the depth chart at left end and he maintained his position throughout the spring…he lost his starting job to Noah Happe during fall camp...Dan posted weightlifting bests of 315 pounds in the bench press, 275.6 in the power clean and 415 in the squat.
(2000—Redshirt Freshman)—Dan played in four games as a redshirt freshman in 2000, including the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame…he produced 5 defensive points as a No. 3 on the depth chart at left end…he reported for spring drills as the No. 3 defensive end behind senior DeLawrence Grant and junior Kyle Rosselle, and he remained third on the depth chart when spring drills concluded...Dan’s weightlifting marks in winter conditioning were 345 in the back squat, 265 in the bench press and 231 in the power clean.
(1999—Freshman)—Dan spent the 1999 season as a redshirt defensive end performing on the scout team...during his season on the scout team he gave the appearance of a player who has a bright future.
LAKE OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL—(1996-99)—Dan played football two years as a starter for former OSU All-American Steve Coury...recruited by Army, Navy, Oregon...three-year starter on the Lake Oswego basketball team...Three Rivers League all-star in 1997-98...captain of football team...played entire senior football season with broken thumb...played tight end and defensive end...he had nine quarterback sacks and caught 12 passes as a tight end... “We couldn’t throw to him much because of the cast on his hand,” said Coury...“He’s athletic and strong, a guy who in three years will be 6-8 and weigh 260 pounds,” said Coury...Rothwell played only three games as a junior because of a back injury...he was a three-year starter on the basketball team and four-year letterwinner...selected as a Three Rivers League all-star as a junior and senior...he was captain of the football and basketball teams as a senior... “He’s very, very young at playing and still doesn’t totally understand the game, but he’s had some great games for us,” said Coury. “So much is ahead for him. I think what everybody has seen, and Oregon State is counting on, is betting on the come, see what the future can hold. The two things you can’t coach are size and athletic ability. It may be three years before he sees the field, but the program is in it for the long haul and (Rothwell) fits that plan. It’s easy to take a chance with a kid like this, with all his ability. He’s a definite sleeper, but the proof will be in three years, to see where he is.
