PERSONAL—(Pronounced Cou-tt) Born 3/21/80 in El Paso, Texas…son of Marilee Coote…his mother works for a casino in Speaking Rock, Texas…he is in the College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major…enjoys music, video games, chess and baseball…his favorite athlete is Deion Sanders…signing a letter of intent with Oregon State has been his top athletic thrill to date…selected OSU because, “great coaching staff.”
OSU—(2003—Senior Redshirt)—D.J. redshirted during the 2002 season after coming off knee surgery following the 2001 season...he has played in a total of seven games thus far in his OSU career...D.J. spent the spring in competition for one of the two starting cornerback positions...he will report to fall camp listed No. 2 on the depth chart at right corner behind Brandon Browner...D.J. will still have an opportunity to earn the starting spot in fall camp...D.J. has posted weightlifting bests of 370 in the back squat, 360 in the bench press, 292.1 in the power clean and 242.5 in the push press...his best mark in the vertical jump is 35 inches.
(2002—Senior)—D.J. had knee surgery on January 2, 2002 to repair a torn ACL on his right knee...as a result of the knee surgery, D.J. did not participate during spring drills...after not participating in spring drills the OSU coaching staff decided to take advantage of D.J. having a redshirt year available and redshirted him during the 2002 season...D.J. participated in six games as a junior and produced 25 defensive points...due to knee surgery, D.J. did not participate in most of the winter conditioning activities...he did participate in the bench press and produced a mark of 325 pounds.
(2001—Junior)—D.J. earned a letter in 2001 by playing in six games...he recorded a total of 25 defensive points, based on eight tackles (seven solo) and one pass breakup...his most productive game was at New Mexico State when he produced 13 defensive points on five tackles (four solo)...he had a solo tackle vs. UCLA...he had two solo tackles vs. Arizona and he recorded a pass breakup against Northern Arizona...he also played against Fresno State and Oregon...D.J. enrolled at Oregon State at the start of spring quarter and participated in spring drills…he was listed No. 1 at left corner for the start of spring drills…he returned to fall camp listed No. 3 on the depth chart at left corner…D.J. is a very talented corner but was having trouble early adjusting to the more complex coverage system used by Oregon State during the spring…has outstanding speed and his strength is man coverage…he is strong for his size, posting weightlifting bests of 330 in the bench press and 300 in the squat.
VENTURA COLLEGE, Ventura, CA—Signed with OSU in early signing period…selected honorable mention All-American by J.C. Grid-Wire following 2000 season…he was a two-time unanimous first-team All-Western State Conference selection at cornerback…he was a unanimous two-time first-team California junior college all-state player…he was Ventura College’s co-Most Valuable Player in 2000…also recruited by USC, LSU, Missouri, Colorado, San Diego State, Kansas State, California, Arizona State, Middle Tennessee State and BYU…ran the 40 in 4.52…rated as the 16th best junior college athlete in the nation by SuperPrep Magazine…he was a preseason second-team All-American selection by J.C. Grid-Wire…played junior college football for Coach Terry Morris at Ventura College… “He is a very aggressive corner. He supports the run and plays the fade pattern as well as any cornerback I have ever coached,” said Morris…“Division 1 coaches recognized D.J. as one of the top three defensive backs in the United States (junior college).”...after intercepting eight balls as a freshman and earning All-State honors, many coaches admittedly refused to throw his way in 2000...“The fade pattern to D.J.’s side of the field was a sure interception,” said Morris…he accounted for 64 tackles as a freshman, including 52 solo…he broke up 15 passes and intercepted eight passes in 1999…as a sophomore, he broke up 12 passes, intercepted four and accounted for 35 tackles, including 34 solo.
BEL AIR HIGH SCHOOL, El Paso, Texas—D.J. earned two letters in football as a wide receiver and cornerback and two letters in baseball as a shortstop at Belair High School…he earned all-league honors as a wide receiver and cornerback his senior year…played football for Coach Rick Soto.
