PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE:
(1968)-- Gregg served as an undergraduate assistant for one year at the University of Idaho under Coach Y.C. McNeese while working toward his degree.
(1969-72)--Gregg’s first coaching job after graduating from Idaho landed him as an assistant coach at Sunset High School in Beaverton, Oregon, under Coach Mouse Davis.
(1973-77)--Gregg moved to Buhl, Idaho in 1973 to become an assistant football coach at Buhl High School. Gregg spent the next five years as an assistant at Buhl.
(1978-81)--Gregg was promoted to head coach at Buhl High School in 1978. Gregg’s Buhl team went 26-0 during his first two years to win the state championship in Idaho. Buhl was 13-0 in 1978 and 13-0 again in 1979. Buhl recorded an 11-1 record in 1980 and 6-4 in 1981 under Gregg. His four-year record as a prep head coach at Buhl read 43-5 (.896), with two state championships.
(1982-85)--Gregg moved to the University of Idaho as offensive line coach under Coach Dennis Erickson in 1982 and remained with Erickson through the 1985 season.
(1986)--Gregg moved with Erickson to Wyoming in 1986 where he served as the offensive line coach.
(1987-88)--Gregg moved with Erickson to Washington State University in 1987 and spent two years as the Cougars’ offensive line coach, where he produced guard Mike Utley, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions of the NFL.
(1989-94)--Gregg moved with Erickson to the University of Miami in 1989 as offensive line coach, plus he also served as Erickson’s assistant head coach, handling administrative duties. While at Miami, he had five of his Hurricane linemen drafted by NFL teams, including tackle Leon Searcy with the 11th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1992.
(1995-98)--Gregg moved with Erickson to the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League in 1995. Gregg was assistant head coach for the Seahawks during his four seasons with the club. He served as tight ends coach for two seasons
(1995-96) prior to teaming with offensive line coach Howard Mudd during the ‘97 campaign. Gregg gained total control of the offensive line in 1998. As tight ends coach, he guided the development of tight ends Carlester Crumpler and Christian Fauria. The duo combined for 84 receptions in 1995-96 and their blocking was a key reason Seattle finished third and fifth in the NFL in rushing yards in 1995 and ‘96.
(1999)--Gregg moved with Erickson in January, 1999, to become Oregon State’s assistant head coach and offensive line coach.
PREP ATHLETIC CAREER: Attended Moscow High School in Moscow, Idaho. Lettered in football, basketball and baseball. Earned honorable mention All-State honors at tight end his senior year.
COLLEGE ATHLETIC CAREER: Attended University of Idaho on football scholarship and played one year as a tight end (1965) before a knee injury ended his career.
EDUCATION: Graduated from Moscow High School in Moscow, Idaho, in 1965. Graduated with B.S. in education from University of Idaho, 1969.
PERSONAL: Full name--John Greggory (Gregg) Smith. Gregg and his wife, the former Gloria Fleming, have three children, Cori, 27 (1/16/75), Laci, 25 (7/20/77), and Tyler, 23 (10/29/79). Daughter Cori is a member of OSU’s BASF staff.

NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Coached guard Mike Utley at Washington State, who was a first-team All-America selection and a third-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions of the NFL. At Miami, Gregg had five of his linemen drafted by NFL teams, including tackle Leon Searcy with the 11th overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1992. As a head coach, Gregg produced two undefeated state championship teams in four years at Buhl High School in Buhl, Idaho. Gregg was named one of six finalists for the Frank Broyles Assistant Coach of the Year Award in December, 2000.
