PERSONAL--Born 2/24/78 in Fort Knox, Kentucky...son of Charles and Shirley O’Neal...his father is a financial manager and his mother is an alcohol and drug control officer...he is in the College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major...he would like to become a college professor...has three brothers and sisters, Ryan, 26; Danielle, 20; and Jennifer, 18...his father played college basketball (1971-75) and his brother Ryan played college football (1991-93)...he has a daughter, Miriah O’Neal, 2...enjoys playing pool and watching sports...favorite players are Bruce Smith, John Randall, Reggie White and Deacon Jones...his top athletic thrill to date was winning the GMC Strawberry Bowl in 1998 (Cerritos defeated Allan Hancock 35-21)...selected OSU because, “closer to home and my parents can attend games.”
OSU--(2000-Senior)--Charles played in eight games as a backup defensive tackle in 1999 and produced four defensive points as a result of making 2 tackles...Charles was one of three lettermen defensive tackles reporting for spring drills and Charles was listed No. 1 at right tackle for the start of spring drills...following the first scrimmage, adjustments were made on the depth chart and Charles slipped to No. 2 at right tackle, where he remained the rest of the spring...he will report to fall camp as the No. 2 right tackle...in the winter conditioning program, Charles produced outstanding numbers...he produced the fifth best back squat lift at 475 pounds and the third best bench press mark at 395 pounds...he also had a power clean lift of 275 pounds.
OSU-(1999-Junior)--Charles enrolled at Oregon State spring quarter and participated in spring drills...it did not take very long for Charles to establish himself as a player...opened spring drills as No. 2 on the depth chart behind incumbent starter Aaron Wells and he completed the spring in the same spot...Charles will definitely be part of OSU's rotation at the tackle positions this fall...gives OSU some added size on the defensive line...has good quickness and is able to free himself quickly from a block...will get plenty of playing time this fall...had one solo tackle in the final spring game at Hillsboro on May 1...posted a bench press mark of 365 pounds in the weight room.
CERRITOS COLLEGE, Norwalk, CA--(1997-98)--Selected first-team All-State in Region IV by the JC Athletic Bureau following his sophomore season...first-team all-league (Mission Conference Northern Division) in 1998...two-year starter at Cerritos College under Coach Frank Mazzotta...served as team captain and was named the defensive Player-of-the-Year on the Cerritos team... "He runs well, he is extremely quick and has a good nose for the football," said Mazzotta... "He is a good pass rusher and has good instincts for finding the football."...Cerritos finished the 1998 season with a 9-2 record and ranked fifth among California community colleges...in 10 games as a sophomore, he produced 11 solo tackles, 23 assisted tackles, 4 quarterback sacks, 7 quarterback hurries, 2 tackles and 5 passes broken up...during his freshman season, he had 29 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, returned a pass interception for a touchdown and broke up 2 passes.
BARSTOW HIGH SCHOOL--(1994-96)--Charles earned three letters and was a three-year starter for Barstow High School, a class 2A school...the Aztecs posted a three-year record of 28-4-1 during his tenure...served as team captain as a senior...selected first-team All-CIF in southern section...originally signed letter of intent out of Barstow High School with Idaho but did not qualify for admission and then enrolled at Cerritos College.
