Nigel Burton is in his second year on the coaching staff at Oregon State.
Burton came to OSU from Portland State University, where he had been employed since the 2001 season. He began his PSU career as the coach of the cornerbacks and kick and punt return units. He was promoted following the season to the secondary coach and special teams' coordinator. Burton added to his coaching resume in the summer 2002 by serving as an intern for the Denver Broncos with secondary and linebacker responsibilities.
Burton began his coaching career in 1999 at the University of South Florida. While a graduate assistant coach in charge of cornerbacks at USF, he assisted in the development of Anthony Henry, the 2001 NFL Rookie of the Year runner-up.
He concluded his college playing career at the University of Washington, where he earned three letters as a safety. He started 35 of a possible 36 games for the Huskies, and competed in the Holiday, Aloha and Oahu Bowls. Burton was the player who tipped former Beaver quarterback Jonathan Smith's two-point conversion pass with no time on the clock in the Beavers' 35-34 loss at Husky Stadium Oct. 24, 1998. He completed his Husky career with 175 tackles and three interceptions. While at UW he served on the school's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, attended the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference, was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team (three times), and was a member of the CoSIDA District All-Academic Team.
Burton began his college career at the University of The Pacific, where he lettered as a true freshman in 1995, prior to the school dropping football. He had 85 tackles in 11 games, including 18 in a contest vs. New Mexico State. He also earned Big West Conference Player of the Week honors after an outstanding game vs. Louisiana Tech.
Burton is a current member of the NCAA Initial Eligibility Consultants' group, an NCAA appointed group that reports directly to the NCAA President and Board of Directors on issues concerning prospective student-athlete initial eligibility.
Burton is a 1999 graduate of Washington with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He earned a master's degree in business administration from South Florida in 2001. His academic career also includes receiving a Black Coaches' Association postgraduate award in 2000 and the National Association of College Directors of Athletics John McClendon Memorial Minority Scholarship in 2000.
Nigel is married to the former Heather Brewer.
