PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE:
(1986-94)—Al got his first coaching opportunity at his alma mater, Cal State-Hayward, when he was named secondary/linebacker coach. He was named defensive coordinator in 1988.
(1994)—Al joined the staff of San Francisco State University in August, 1994 as defensive coordinator and secondary coach for one season.
(1995-96)—Al moved to Montana State University in February, 1995 as secondary coach. He remained with the Bobcats until January, 1997.
(1997-98)—Al joined the Idaho State University staff in January, 1997 to become defensive coordinator and secondary coach, a position he held until March, 1998.
(1998-01)—Al joined the staff of the University of California in March,1998. Al served as the cornerbacks coach and assisted with aspects of special teams for the Bears for three seasons.
(2001)—Al joined Dennis Erickson at Oregon State in February, 2001. Al serves as the Beavers’ secondary coach.
PREP ATHLETIC RECORD: Attended Oakland High School, Oakland, CA…he played three years of high school football as a linebacker and graduated in 1981.
COLLEGE ATHLETIC RECORD: Attended Cal State Hayward where he was a two-time first team All-NorCal Conference selection as a strong safety in 1983 and ’84. Prior to attending Cal State-Hayward, Al was a standout linebacker at Laney College in Oakland, CA, where he also was twice honored as a first team all-conference selection.
EDUCATION: Graduated from Oakland High School in Oakland, CA in 1981. Attended Laney College, Oakland, CA from 1981-83. He attended Cal State-Hayward from September, 1983 until December, 1987, earning a B.S. degree in business administration with emphasis on accounting. He also earned a Master of Science degree in physical education in August, 1991, with concentration in athletic administration and motor learning from Cal State-Hayward.
PERSONAL: Full name—Alfred (Al) Simmons. He is single and resides in Corvallis.

NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Al has had the opportunity to participate four times in the National Football League’s Minority Fellowship Coaching program. In the summer of 1993 he was selected by the Los Angeles Raiders to participate and spent the summer as a defensive secondary coaching assistant. In the summer of 1996 he was a defensive secondary assistant with the Arizona Cardinals. In the summer of 1999, he was selected to be a linebacker coaching assistant with the San Diego Chargers. He spent the summer of 2000 as a defensive secondary coaching assistant with the Dallas Cowboys. Simmons has a track record of helping defenses improve. At Cal State-Hayward, his defense finished No. 1 in the conference in scoring defense and No. 2 in total defense in 1992. When he moved to San Francisco State, he helped the Gators place second in their conference in total defense, pass defense, turnovers created and scoring defense. While he was at Montana State, the Bobcats finished second in the Big Sky Conference in pass efficiency defense in both 1995 and ’96. At California, his work with the inexperienced Deltha O’Neal, who went from a back-up tailback to the first cornerback chosen in the 2000 NFL draft, is a testament to his coaching and teaching skills. Current Beaver cornerback Dennis Weathersby was selected All-Pac-10 and All-American following the 2001 season.
