PERSONAL--Born 12/3/76 in San Jose, CA...son of Charles and Linda Sorenson...his father is a food buyer and his mother is a teacher...Chad is in the College of Health and Human Performance and he is an exercise and sports science major...has one younger sister, Cheryl, 19, who plays basketball at the University of Washington...an uncle, Roger Merritt, played basketball at Washington State (1963-67), and another uncle, Al Merritt, was a track athlete at Western Washington (1966-70)...his top athletic thrill to date was setting a high school track and field record in the 400-meter dash at 49.5 and winning the No Fear Bowl in 1997 while starting at Palomar JC...selected OSU because, "of OSU's excellent academics in health sciences, and also to play Pac-10 football for a team close to my parents' home in Portland."
OSU--(1999-Senior)--Chad entered spring drills listed No. 2 at flanker...he completed the spring listed No. 4 at flanker, being passed on the depth chart by incoming scholarship players...failed to make a catch in OSU's three major scrimmages...it will be difficult for Chad to see playing time in 1999, especially with two more JC All-Americans joining the program in the fall...in the weight room, Chad posted personal bests of 250 pounds in the hang clean, 310 in the bench press, 350 in the back squat and 254 in the incline...his best vertical jump mark is 28.50 inches and he tested for only 4.83 percent body fat.
(1998-Junior)--Chad joined the OSU program as a walk-on wide receiver during winter quarter...he went through the off-season program and spring practice...he was on the depth chart as the No. 4 split end at the start of spring drills and reported to fall camp as the No. 3 flanker...caught 4 passes for 142 yards, including a 80-yard TD pass from Nick Stremick in OSU's first spring scrimmage...caught 1 pass for 39 yards in the second scrimmage and he did not catch a pass in the spring game...has good hands and surprising speed...his spring performance indicated he can play at this level...Chad played in the opening game of the season against Nevada and failed to make a catch...did not see action the rest of the season.
PALOMAR JUNIOR COLLEGE, San Marcos, CA (1996-97)--Chad was a starting wide receiver at Palomar College...played for Coach Tom Craft...caught 14 passes for 155 yards (11.1 average) and 1 touchdown, with a long of 37 yards as a freshman in nine games...played in 10 games as a sophomore but his statistics are not available.
CLACKAMAS HIGH SCHOOL, Milwaukie, OR (1992-95)--Chad was a versatile athlete at Clackamas High School, earning four letters in track and field, two in football, one in soccer and one in basketball...he was a wide receiver for Coach Bill Hartman in football...Clackamas finished second in the state 4A basketball tournament in 1994, while he played for Coach Dan Isbell...he was team captain of the track team as a junior and senior and a first-team all-league (Three Rivers League) in track and field...a first-team all-league wide receiver as a senior and second-team all-league at defensive back...caught 5 passes for 211 yards and 2 touchdown with a long of 55 yards as a junior...caught 13 passes for 422 yards (40.1 average, which was a school record) as a senior with 5 touchdowns and a long of 75 yards...selected to play in the Shrine All-Star football game in summer of 1996...his top prep game was against Lakeridge when he accounted for 250 all-purpose yards.
