PERSONAL--Born 1/29/73 in Canberra, Australia...son of Paavo and Tuula Luoma...has one older brother, Mike, 28...he is in the College of Health and Human Performance and his major is exercise and sports science...surfing is one of his hobbies...Steve Young is his favorite athlete...his top athletic thrill to date is making it to Division I-A football...selected OSU because, "I was impressed with what OSU had to offer and the coaching staff."
OSU--(1999-Senior)--Paul reported to spring drills listed as the No. 2 right tackle behind Shawn Ball...had an excellent spring and will report to fall camp as the No. 2 right tackle...gives OSU a good veteran backup on the defensive line...Paul has great strength and a defensive mentality...loves to deliver a blow...in the weight room he has produced OSU personal bests of 328 pounds in the hang clean, 420 in the bench press, 560 in the back squat and 325 in the incline...his best vertical jump has been 26.00 inches...the oldest player on the squad at 26 years old.
(1998-Junior)--Paul reported to OSU for the first time in August for the start of fall camp and quickly worked his way up the depth chart at a tackle position...Paul played in 10 games, missing only the season opener with Nevada as a result of a one-game suspension...he accounted for 24 defensive points, including 4 solo tackles and 7 assisted tackles and one tackle for loss.
SANTA BARBARA CITY COLLEGE--(1996-97)--Paul played two years of football for Santa Barbara City College for Coach Chuck Melendez...was a two-year starter on the defensive line for Santa Barbara CC and earned first-team all-league (Western State Conference-North Division) honors as a sophomore...he is a 26-year-old former rugby player from Australia...he played three years of American football in Australia and two years of junior college football...he is very strong and posted weightlifting marks of 475 in the bench press and over 600 in squat at Santa Barbara City College...runs the 40 in 4.85...in 10 games as a sophomore, Paul recorded 35 solo tackles, 50 assisted tackles, 4 quarterback sacks, 8 tackles, blocked a kick and recovered 2 fumbles...as a freshman in 10 games, Paul had 11 solo tackles and 21 assisted tackles and 2 tackles for loss... "I have always been interested in aggressive sports," Luoma told the Santa Barbara News-Press...Coach Melendez said, "he was a definite force on defense. He controlled the line of scrimmage for us. He would overpower people and certainly disrupted our opponents' passing game. He disrupts everything in practice, and makes it hard for our offense to run against him."...also recruited by California, Hawaii, San Diego State and San Jose State.
COOMBABAH HIGH SCHOOL--Paul attended high school at Coombabah High School, located in Queensland, Australia...he played rugby in high school and did not play American football until after he graduated from high school.
