PERSONAL--Born 9/23/73 in Lexington, North Carolina...son of Ivey Petty, Jr. and Verana Petty...his father is a high school teacher and his mother is a hematology counselor...Greg is in the College of Liberal Arts and is an art major...his uncle, Carols Terry, played basketball for the NBA Washington Bullets in the early 1980s...was senior class President at Baumholder American High School in West Germany...his top athletic thrill to date has been receiving an athletic scholarship from Oregon State...selected OSU because, "the Pac-10 is the best conference in the country and athletic graduation rate is impressive, plus I respect the honesty of the coaching staff."...at 26 years old, Greg is the second oldest player on the roster, eight months younger than Paul Luoma.
OSU--(1999-Senior)--Greg reported to spring drills listed No. 2 on the depth chart at left end on defense...he completed spring drills listed No. 3 at left end...in the final spring game at Hillsboro on May 1, he had a solo tackle and quarterback sack for the winning White team...gives OSU experienced depth at defensive end...in the weight room, Greg has posted personal bests of 255 pounds in the hang clean, 370 in the bench press, 415 in the back squat and 325 in the incline...his vertical jump best os 22.00 inches.
(1998-Junior)--Greg reported to OSU for the first time in August for the start of fall camp and was listed as a tight end on the depth chart...however, Greg was moved to defensive end midway through fall camp to help the Beavers' depth situation at defensive end, plus OSU had three proven tight ends...Greg played in 10 games, missing the Washington game...recorded 7 defensive points, all coming in the season opener against Nevada on 2 solo tackles and an assisted tackle.
LOS ANGELES VALLEY COLLEGE--(1996-97)--Greg played for Coach Gary Barlow at Los Angeles Valley College, located in Van Nuys, CA...has 4.6 speed in 40...also recruited by Stanford, UCLA, Colorado State and San Diego State...he was a preseason JC All-American by PrepStar Magazine...was named one of the top five JC tight ends in the nation by a national recruiting service...Greg was a first-team All-Western State Conference pick as a freshman and sophomore...he was the third option in an offense that had two wide receivers combine for 139 receptions...caught 16 passes for 1 touchdown as a sophomore and 7 passes for 1 touchdown as a freshman...Coach Barlow said, "he is a very good blocker and has excellent hands. We have been among the top five offensive teams in the nation for the past five years and it is because of players like Greg. I look for big things from him at Oregon State."
BAUMHOLDER AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL, Baumholder, West Germany (1991)--Greg attended Baumholder American High School in Baumholder, West Germany and played only one year (his senior year) of high school football as a tight end and outside linebacker for coach David and earned first-team all-conference honors.
