PERSONAL--Born 1/28/78 in Tampa, Florida...son of John and Phoung Ball...has two brothers, Hieu, 33; and Shannon, 22...in the College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major at OSU...his father is a salesman and his mother is a purchasing agent...enjoys wrestling, weightlifting and surfing...winning the state championship in wrestling was his top prep athletic thrill...selected OSU because, "I really liked the coaching staff and all the facilities."
OSU--(1999-Senior)--Shawn enters his senior year with a total of 18 starts, including all 11 as a junior...played in 28 games...has produced a total of 174 career defensive points, including 24 solo tackles and 17 assisted tackles...has 5 1/2 career sacks and 7 1/2 career tackles for loss...enjoyed a very successful spring practice and will report to fall camp as the No. 1 right tackle...in the weight room, Shawn has posted career bests of 335 pounds in the hang clean; 415 in the bench press; 566 in the back squat and 355 in the incline...has vertical jump best of 31.50 inches...had one sack for the winning White team in the final spring game.
(1998-Junior)--Shawn entered his junior season having played in 17 games and started seven, all as a sophomore...Shawn had his best spring to date at OSU and stepped up his play in the spring of 1998...smaller than most nose guards, but is strong, gets good leverage and has above average quickness...played and started in all 11 games for the Beavers and produced 129 defensive points, 10th best among OSU defensive players, including 16 solo tackles, 12 assisted tackles, 4 1/2 sacks and 6 1/2 tackles for loss...caused a fumble and had 3 quarterback hurry plays...produced 14 points vs. Nevada, including 2 tackles, a 1/2 sack, a 1/2 tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry play; 15 vs. Baylor, coming on 3 tackles and a sack; 1 vs. USC; 25 vs. Arizona State, including 3 tackles, 2 sacks and 2 tackles for loss; 9 vs. Utah State; 1 against Stanford; 22 vs. Arizona, including 6 tackles and 2 tackles for loss; 7 vs. Washington; 0 vs. California; 18 vs. UCLA, including 5 tackles and one tackle for loss; and 17 against Oregon, including 3 tackles and a sack and tackle for loss.
(1997-Sophomore)--After earning a letter as one of three true freshmen who played in 1996 (the other two were Roddy Tompkins and David Moran), Shaun entered spring practice as the No. 1 nose guard in OSU's four-man front and he held that spot the entire spring...while small for the position, Shawn uses his quickness, strength and overall athletic ability to play nose guard...Shawn played in 10 of 11 games as a sophomore, missing only the Utah State game...started seven games, the first four and three of the final four games...did not start against UCLA, Washington and Oregon...produced a total of 34 defensive points, including 7 solo tackles and one quarterback sack against San Jose State.
(1996--Freshman)--Shawn reported to fall camp as a freshman expecting to redshirt during the 1996 season...however, it became apparent that Shawn's quickness and strength was good enough to have him on the field playing as a true freshman...did not play until the fourth game of the season, California, and participated in 12 plays in his first collegiate encounter...did not play the following week against Washington State, but he did see action in the final six games of the year...all told, participated in 72 plays as a true freshman and produced 11 defensive points, and 10 of those were against Stanford...he probably would have played sooner had he not been slowed with an ankle sprain that caused him to miss four days of fall camp.
PUNAHOU HIGH SCHOOL, Honolulu, Hawaii (1993-95)--Shawn played for Coach Dan Morrison at Punahou High School in the ILH Conference...earned two letters in football and three in wrestling...in wrestling, Shawn was the state runner-up heavyweight as a junior and was undefeated as a senior and won the state heavyweight crown...he was a two-year starter in football at defensive tackle...as a senior in 13 games, Shawn had 52 solo tackles, 40 assisted tackles, 15 sacks and 20 tackles for loss...was a first-team all-league pick (ILH)...was a Schott Coaches All-American honorable mention selection...he played alongside USA Today prep All-American Jason Ching...also visited SMU and Hawaii..."He is very active and very physical. He played next to Jason Ching, who might be the best lineman in the country," said coach Morrison. "He never gives up, very quick and a tough kid."...he competed as a shot putter in the spring for the track team, plus he competed in the Big Man Relays in the Hawaii Games, taking first place...he also took third place in the USA/Japan Open Goodwill Sumop Tournament in the unlimited division.
