PERSONAL--Born 8/30/79 in Roseburg, OR...has two older sisters, Nicki, 27; and Desta, 24...he is in the College of Home Economics and Education and his major is health promotion & education...entered OSU with a 3.5 GPA out of Roseburg High School...he was a member of the National Honor Society at Roseburg and on the Roseburg honor roll...his favorite athletes are Shannon Sharpe, Ben Coates and John Elway...all sports are his hobbies...his top athletic thrill to date has been winning back-to-back state 4A football championships and going 28-0 over the last two years at Roseburg, and winning all-state honors on offense and defense...selected OSU because, "of the new coaching staff because they were very up front and honest."
OSU—(2001—Senior)—Mark has played in 34 games at OSU going into his senior season…he has not started a game and has yet to catch a collegiate pass…he has been used mainly as a blocking tight end and has played extensively on special teams…Mark’s role will likely remain the same during the 2001 season…he will be listed No. 3 on the depth chart at tight end when fall camp opens…Mark posted winter lifting bests of 350 in the bench press, 275.6 in the power clean and 555 in the squat.
OSU--(2000-Junior)--Mark will open his junior season having played in 22 games for OSU, all as a backup tight end...Mark has been used in double tight end sets and on special teams so far in his career...he has not caught a pass so far in his Beaver career...he opened spring drills as the No. 3 tight end behind seniors Marty Maurer and Bennie Johnson...he completed spring drills as the No. 3 tight end...his experience will be a valuable commodity for OSU in 2000...in winter conditioning, Mark posted weightlifting bests of 455 in the back squat, the 10th best mark on the team, and 335 in the bench press and 275 in the power clean.
OSU--(1999-Sophomore)--As a one-year letterman, Mark reported to spring drills listed No. 2 on the depth chart at tight end...the tight end position turned out to be a very competitive area during spring drills between Martin Maurer, Walsh and junior college transfer Bennie Johnson...in the three major scrimmages of the spring, Mark did not catch a pass...when fall camp opens, Mark will be listed No. 3 on the depth chart at tight end, the difference being both Maurer and Johnson caught the ball more consistently than did Mark...Mark will be involved on the field in 1999, both on special teams and at tight end...in the weight room, Mark has produced personal bests of 276 pounds in the hang clean, 305 in the bench press, 515 in the back squat and 255 in the incline...his best vertical jump is 27.50 inches.
(1998-Freshman)--Mark was red-shirted so he would have an opportunity to add some size and more strength as he is considered an outstanding prospect...he added 15 pounds, up to 245, and looked like a Pac-10 tight end heading into 1998...he is a strong blocker and is a good receiver...reported to spring drills as the No. 3 tight end and finished in the same position...Mark played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 1998, missing only the Washington game...OSU used a lot of two tight end situations and sometimes even three, thus Mark saw a lot of action, mainly as a blocker...Mark did not catch a pass in 1998.
(1997-Redshirt Freshman)--Mark spent the 1997 season as a redshirt tight end playing on the scout team.
ROSEBURG HIGH SCHOOL--(1994-96)--Mark earned two letters in football and was a two-year starter on offense (TE) and defense (DE) for Coach Thurman Bell, a former Oregon State player...Mark also earned two letters as a starting post player in basketball and two in track and field as a participant in the javelin, high jump and triple jump...he was a two-time all-league (Southern Oregon Conference) pick at tight end and defensive end...he was co-captain his senior year...as a senior for the Indians, he was named first-team all-state by the Oregonian at tight end and defensive end...was named honorable mention All-American by Street & Smith Magazine...was listed #20 on Super Prep Magazine's top 27 Northwest players list...also an honorable mention pick on the Tacoma News Tribune's Northwest Nuggets list...he received two votes on the Long Beach Press Telegram's Best in the West list...runs 4.7 in the 40, has good size, speed, hands and blocking ability...he never played in a losing high school football game as Roseburg went 28-0 overall during his junior and senior years and won back-to-back state 4A football championships...caught 28 passes for 480 yards and 6 TDs as a senior, including 7 for 149 yards and 1 TD against Marshfield in the state semifinals...had a long gain of 69 yards...as a junior, Mark caught 27 passes for 628 yards, 3 TDs and a long gain of 67 yards, giving him a career total of 55 passes caught for 1,108 yards, 20.1 average, and 9 TDs in his prep career...selected OSU over USC...Coach Bell said, "He has all the attributes you are looking for in a tight end. He is a super blocker, runs very well (4.7 in 40) and has great hands."...he was selected second team Pac-10 Region in the winter issue of SuperPrep Magazine.
