PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE:
2002—Darryll retired from pro football following the 2000 season and became an assistant coach at Jefferson High School in Los Angeles, CA.
2003—Darryll was hired by the University of Idaho as secondary coach in January for Coach Tom Cable. When Mike Riley was hired at Oregon State in February 2003, he asked for permission to talk to Lewis. Permission was received and Riley hired Lewis to coach the Beavers’ secondary.
PREP ATHLETIC RECORD: Darryll attended Nogales High School in LaPuente, CA. He graduated in 1986 after earning two letters each in football and baseball. Had 157 carries for 1,423 yards (9.1 avg.) as a running back and played defensive back. He was an all-league selection and co-MVP of Sierra Conference. He hit .388 in baseball and was team captain for both sports.
COLLEGE ATHLETIC RECORD: Darryll earned four letters at Arizona in football (1987-90). Played running back for redshirt and freshman seasons at Arizona before conversion to cornerback. Three-year totals included 146 total tackles, 14 interceptions, 18 passes defended and five forced fumbles. Had 53 punt returns for 463 yards (8.7 avg.). Earned consensus first-team All-Pac-10 and All-American honors at left cornerback s senior. Named by The Sporting News as hardest hitting defensive back in Pac-10 (fifth in nation). He won Tim Thorpe Trophy as nation’s outstanding defensive back and was also the Pac-10’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year. Earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors as a junior. Started 10 games as a running back as a freshman, gaining 197 yards and catching 16 passes for 272 yards. Played in the Hula Bowl following graduation.
PROFESSIONAL ATHLETIC RECORD: Drafted out of Arizona as a second-round pick (38th player overall) by the Houston Oilers. Played for the Oilers in Houston from 1991-96. Moved with team to Nashville, TN, where club was renamed the Tennessee Titans (1997-98). Played under Coach Mike Riley with the San Diego Chargers from 1999-00. He is the only player in Oilers’ history to lead the club in interceptions for five consecutive seasons (1994-98). Earned Pro Bowl honors following the 1995 season. Heading into his final season (2000), Lewis’ 29 interceptions since beginning of 1994 season was the most by any AFC defender. Played in 142 games and had over 100 starts in the NFL.
EDUCATION: Graduated from Nogales High School, LaPuente, Calif., 1986. Graduated from University of Arizona in 1991 with B.S. degree in sociology.
PERSONAL: Full name Darryll Lamont Lewis. Darryll has two daughters, Ari (4/12/96) and Evan (3/18/98).

NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Consensus All-American his senior year at Arizona and winner of the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s top defensive back. Named the Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the Pac-10 in 1990. He was inducted into the University of Arizona “Hall of Fame” in 1996. Selected to play in 1995 NFL Pro Bowl. Finished 10-year NFL career with 32 career interceptions and seven touchdowns.
