PERSONAL-Born 9/12/79 in St. Thomas, Jamaica...son of Valdo and Lorna Carlyle...his father works for United Airlines and his mother is a nurse at UCLA hospital...has two brothers, Valdo Jr., 27; and Tyrone, 16...enjoys track and field and reading...Calvin is in the College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major...Calvin received an impressive academic honor during spring quarter of 2000...he was awarded a summer fellowship from a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to Oregon State University...Calvin is the first non-science major at OSU to ever win this award...he was sponsored by OSU professor Dr. Janine Trempy...Calvin was honored again in the spring of 2001 when he was selected as an URISC 2001 Summer Research Fellow…he will be pursuing his research on bacteria in Dr. J.E. Trempy’s Department of Microbiology at OSU…additionally, he is a published co-author on a National meeting abstract, and he will soon be a published co-author for an article that will appear in a top notch peer-reviewed science journal…Calvin selected OSU because "of the opportunities OSU has to offer."
OSU—(2002—Senior)—Calvin was granted an additional year of eligibility by the Pacific-10 Conference as his medical hardship petition was approved on April 25...Calvin played in only the first two games of the season in 2001 before suffering a shoulder injury (left) that required anterior shoulder reconstruction surgery...Calvin was still in the process of rehabbing his shoulder during the spring and was not available to participate...after being out of action for nearly a full year, Calvin will report to fall camp listed No. 3 on the depth chart at strong safety...Calvin had played in a total of 35 out of a possible 37 games prior to his injury last year...he has started a total of 25 games for Oregon State...Calvin has produced a career total of 407 defensive points, including 130 tackles (91 solo)...he has broken up 10 passes and has one career interception...he had three tackles for loss and one sack to his credit, plus he has caused one fumble and recovered three...due to his injury, Calvin was not a participant in the winter conditioning program.
(2001—Senior)—Calvin played in the first two games of the season-Fresno State and New Mexico State-before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury that required anterior (left) shoulder reconstruction surgery...he accounted for 10 tackles vs. Fresno State for 28 defensive points...he came back with 15 points vs. New Mexico State with three tackles, including a tackle for loss, and a pass broken up...he finished his two-game season with 26 defensive points...Calvin entered the 2001 season having played in 33 of 35 games since arriving at OSU...he had started 23…Calvin had produced 364 career points heading into the season…he had 117 tackles, including 80 solo tackles…he had broken up nine passes, had one interception, two tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries, a pass interception, a sack and a caused fumble…Calvin, a two-year starter at free safety, alternated during spring drills at free safety and cornerback…Calvin was listed as the No. 1 left cornerback on the depth chart going into fall camp…Calvin had started more games in the secondary than any of the other returning Beaver secondary players…Calvin did not participate in the weightlifting aspect due to his previous shoulder surgery.
(2000—Junior)—Calvin had corrective surgery to repair a left shoulder subluxation problem during the 1999 season in January...as a result of the surgery, Calvin did not participate in spring drills...Calvin entered the 2000 season with a string of 12 straight starts and having played in 22 of 23 games in two years at OSU...despite missing spring drills, Calvin reported to fall camp as the Beavers’ starting free safety...he started the first nine games of the season before a sprained left foot in the California game forced him to miss the Arizona contest…Calvin played against Oregon but did not start…he started at free safety vs. Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl…his starting streak was stopped at 21 games due to the injury in the California game…Calvin produced a total of 158 defensive points during the season, eighth best on the team…he accounted for 49 tackles, including 38 solo…he had two tackles for loss and a sack…he caused a fumble, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass…he produced two points vs. Eastern Washington…he had 10 points against New Mexico, including three solo tackles…he had 19 points in the San Diego State contest, including six tackles and a tackle for loss…he had a season-high 22 points vs. USC with four tackles and a fumble recovery…he had six tackles for 14 points at Washington…he had six tackles and a pass broken up for 19 points vs. Stanford…had 15 points on four tackles and a forced fumble at UCLA…had 20 points on four tackles, a sack and tackle for loss vs. WSU…had four tackles for 12 points at California before leaving late in the game with a sprained left foot…came off the bench for seven tackles and 21 points in a solid performance against Oregon…had two tackles vs. Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl…one of the hardest hitters on the team and a player who continually played with a lot of injuries...because of his shoulder surgery, Calvin did not participate in weightlifting during winter conditioning.
(1999—Sophomore)—Calvin served his apprenticeship well as a freshman, playing behind veteran Armon Hatcher at strong safety...he opened spring drills as the No. 1 strong safety, but midway through spring drills he was moved to free safety and veteran Terrence Carroll moved to strong safety...Calvin wound up starting all 12 games in 1999, including the Oahu Bowl game, at free safety and had an outstanding season...Calvin was selected honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference for his play in 1999...he produced 180 defensive points, sixth best on the team...he was OSU’s top defensive point producer against Hawaii in the Oahu bowl, producing 33 points on six solo tackles, two assisted tackles and his first career interception...his interception led to a field goal which tied the game at halftime 10-10...his 1999 season totals included 38 solo tackles, 15 assisted tackles, seven pass break ups, a pass interception and two recovered fumbles...continued to improve as the season went along and his most productive games were the last four of the season...he produced double-figure defensive points in eight of 12 games...in the Spring Game at Hillsboro, Calvin had 4 tackles for the winning White squad...in the weight room, Calvin produced personal bests of 245 pounds in the hang clean; 335 in the bench press; 365 in the back squat and 265 in the incline...produced a 31.00 inch vertical jump and tested for only 4.88 percent body fat.
(1998—Freshman)—Calvin entered OSU during winter quarter of 1998 and participated in 1998 spring drills as a true freshman, which was his status in the fall...Calvin made the most of his opportunity during the spring and earned himself playing time in 1998 as a true freshman...his play was so outstanding during the spring that he was able to move ahead of Byron Lane, a two-year letterman, at OSU’s strong safety position behind three-year starter Armon Hatcher...Calvin played in 10 games in 1998, missing the opener with Nevada as a result of disciplinary action...played as a backup strong safety and on special teams in the final 10 games, posting 26 defensive points, coming on four solo tackles, 11 assisted tackles and a pass break up.
DORSEY HIGH SCHOOL, Los Angeles, CA (1996-97)—Calvin was a two-year letterman and starter for Dorsey under Coach Paul Knox, playing both strong safety and linebacker...Dorsey was 13-1 his junior year and 4-6 his senior year...he was an all-league (Southern Pacific) strong safety as a junior...he was a first-team all-league linebacker for the Dons as a senior and was a first-team all-city pick as a senior...was named the MVP of his league as a senior...produced 9 sacks and 20 tackles for loss as a senior linebacker.
