LeCharls McDaniel is in his second season at Oregon State University and first working with the Beaver tight ends. He was the program's special teams coach in 2003.
McDaniel began his coaching career in 1986 after playing professional football for four seasons. His first coaching job came at Hartnell Community College in Salinas, Calif. He served as an assistant coach, as an instructor in the strength and conditioning program, and as the head softball coach.
He moved to the NFL in 1989 with the San Diego Chargers, where he coached the special teams for three seasons. His '90 special teams units ranked first in the NFL. He returned to college football in 1992 as the special teams and secondary coach at Cal Poly-SLO, before accepting the wide receivers coaching position with the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL in 1993.
In 1994 and '95 he was the special teams and cornerbacks coach at San Diego State. He was a scout for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1996, before serving as an assistant coach for the Washington Redskins from 1997-2000 (special teams). In 1999, the Redskins finished third in the NFL for field goal percentage, fifth for punt average and second for kickoff return yards. The '98 Redskins were second in net punting.
McDaniel spent the 2001 season as the special teams coach at California, and in 2002 returned to SDSU as special teams and receivers coach. Cal led the Pac-10 Conference for kickoff coverage, and at SDSU he coached two of the nation's top three receivers (receptions) in Kasim Osgood and J.R. Tolvar.
McDaniel signed a free agent contract with the Redskins in 1981 after a standout college career as a cornerback at Cal Poly-SLO. He played for the Redskins in 1981 and '82 and was a member of the team's Super Bowl XVII club. McDaniel also played two seasons with the New York Giants.
Cal Poly won the Division II title in 1980 with McDaniel playing defensive back. He lettered four years for the Mustangs and was selected an honorable mention All-American as a senior. McDaniel was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2002.
McDaniel lettered two years in football at Seaside High School in Seaside, Calif., He earned all-league, all-region, and honorable mention All-American as a senior. He also earned three letters in track in the 100 meters and 330 intermediate hurdles.
He holds a bachelor's degree (1981) from Cal Poly in social sciences.
LeCharls and his wife, Sheryl, have three children, Michelle, Keisha, and Michael.
