PERSONAL--(pronounced Firk-uh-tich) Born 4/11/78 in Salem, OR...son of Len and Karen Frketich...his father, a former OSU football player, is a food broker and his mother is self-employed...he has two older brothers, Lenny, 28 and Matt, 26...in the College of Health and Human Performance and his major is exercise and sports science...his grandfather, Leonard Frketich, played football at Penn State (1935-37) and his father played for the Beavers in 1961 and 1964-65 and was a member of OSU's 1965 Rose Bowl squad...playing in the Oregon Shrine Bowl in 1996 has been his top athletic thrill to date.
OSU--(2000-Senior)--Steve entered spring drills listed No. 3 on the depth chart at right guard....he completed spring drills in the same spot on the depth chart, playing behind Keith DiDomenico and Jared Cornell...in winter conditioning, Steve posted weightlifting bests of 420 in the back squat, 295 in the bench press and 236 in the power clean...Steve is a walk-on player on the OSU roster.
OSU--(1999-Redshirt Junior)--Steve spent spring drills working at right guard and he will report to fall camp as the No. 3 right guard on the depth chart, playing behind Aaron Koch and Mark Christensen...in the weight room, Steve has produced personal bests of 280 pounds in the hang clean, 295 in the bench press, 340 in the back squat and 260 in the incline...his top vertical jump has been 19.00 inches.
(1998-Junior)--Steve reported to OSU for the first time when fall camp opened in August as a walk-on offensive lineman...has played both tackle and center and he initially was listed as a center on the depth chart...he spent the 1998 season as a redshirt while both center and guard.
COLLEGE OF THE SISKIYOUS, Weed, CA (1996-97)--Steve was a two-year starter on the offensive line for the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, CA for Coach Greg Gatlin.
NEWBERG HIGH SCHOOL, Newberg, OR--(1992-95)--Steve was a three-year starter in football at Newberg High School for Coach Eric Carlson, plus he lettered four years in wrestling and four in track as a shot put and discus competitor...he finished sixth in the state as a senior heavyweight wrestler...he was a first-team all-league center and defensive end as a senior and a second-team all-state (Oregonian) center...also earned all-league honors as a junior...played in the Shrine Bowl All-Star game following his senior year...as a defensive end, Steve batted down 18 passes, record 8 sacks and had 79 tackles in two years.
