PERSONAL—Born 1/2/80 in Medford, OR...son of Greg and Dawn Ross...his father is the PIL Athletic Director and his mother is a grade school teacher...his father played football at the University of Utah...entered OSU with a 3.5 GPA...entered OSU as a walk-on player...has an older brother, Zac, 24, and a younger sister, Hannah, 20...he is in the College of Engineering and is a pre-construction engineering management major...his biggest athletic thrill as a prep was hitting a grand slam home run in a little league championship game...selected OSU because, “it has a good engineering and agriculture program and I also like the direction the football program is going.”
OSU—(2002—Senior)—Tyler will enter his senior year as a three-year letterman...he has played in 12 games, none as a starter...originally a walk-on, Tyler was rewarded with a scholarship at the start of his junior year...he opened spring drills as the No. 2 tight end behind Jermaine Jackson...Tim Euhus, the incumbent starter, did not participate in contact during the spring...Euhus will return as the starter in the fall and Jackson will be No. 2 and Ross No. 3 on the tight end depth chart...Tyler has improved as a player each year he has been at OSU and no one works any harder...Tyler has made himself a valuable contributor on special teams and is a backup snapper for PAT and field goal attempts...he has one career reception, a 44-yarder against Northern Arizona in 2001...during the winter program, Tyler posted weightlifting bests of 440 in the back squat, 285 in the bench press, 292 in the power clean and 309 in the push press...his top vertical jump mark was 27.5 inches.
(2001—Junior)—Tyler came to Oregon State as a walk-on and was put on scholarship prior to the 2001 season...Tyler played in 10 games in 2001 as a backup tight end and a special teams player...he missed the Washington State game due to a sprain of the MCL on his left knee...Tyler was also the backup snapper for punts, PAT and field goals in 2001...Tyler caught the first pass of his career against Northern Arizona...he caught a 44-yard pass from Derek Anderson and appeared to be heading for a touchdown only to have the ball knocked loose for a fumble at the goal line...NAU recovered the ball for a touchback and Ross had to settle for a 44-yard gain rather than a 44-yard touchdown...heading into his junior season, Tyler had played in one game as a redshirt freshman and one as a sophomore to earn a letter each year...he started spring drills listed No. 3 on the depth chart at tight end…he had one of the best spring practice performances on the squad…he caught the football and he blocked very well…he caught two passes for 19 yards in OSU’s first spring scrimmage…he was blanked in the second scrimmage and caught one pass for 4 yards for the White squad in the Spring Game…Tyler reported to fall camp as the No. 2 tight end on the depth chart, which earned him his scholarship…he was one of the most improved players on the OSU roster in the spring of 2001…in the winter program, Tyler posted weightlifting bests of 285 in the bench press, 308.6 in the power clean and 440 in the squat.
(2000—Sophomore)—Tyler played in one game, San Diego State, and failed to catch a pass…Tyler reported to spring drills listed No. 5 on the depth chart at tight end...in the four scrimmages during the spring, Tyler caught a pass for 9 yards in the second scrimmage and was blanked in the other three...he moved up a notch on the depth chart following spring drills and reported to fall camp listed No. 4 on the depth chart...Tyler posted weightlifting bests of 435 in the back squat, 270 in the bench press and 291 in the power clean during winter conditioning.
(1999—Redshirt Freshman)—Tyler earned a letter by playing in one game (UCLA) in 1999...he failed to catch a pass in that game...although he did not play in any other games, Tyler was on the travel squad for every road game as a backup tight end and special teams player...Tyler reported to spring drills listed as No. 3 on the depth chart at tight end...following spring drills, Tyler dropped to No. 4 on the depth chart at tight end, which is where he was when he reported to the start of fall camp...in the weight room, Tyler posted personal bests of 315 in the hang clean, 292 in the bench press, 415 in the back squat and 240 in the incline...had a vertical jump best of 31.50 inches.
