PERSONAL—Born 3/12/80 in Salem, OR…son of Dana Lee…he has a brother, David, 20, and a sister, Shanna, 17…he is in the College of Liberal Arts and is a liberal studies major…enjoys video games and lifting weights…his biggest athletic thrill has been smashing a quarterback into the ground…selected OSU because, “it’s close to home and has a good football program.
OSU—(2002—Senior)—James reported to spring drills as the No. 2 right defensive tackle behind veteran Dwan Edwards...a year of being in the winter program paid dividends for James and he enjoyed a very productive spring...he was much stronger and quicker than he was in 2001...he will be the No. 1 backup to Eric Manning and Edwards when fall camp opens and he will see plenty of playing time...he enters his senior year with 25 career defensive points and 10 games under his belt...in the winter program, James posted weightlifting bests of 545 in the back squat, 345 in the bench press, 331 in the power clean and 342 in the push press...he tested for a vertical jump of 27.5 inches.
(2001—Junior)—James lettered as a backup defensive tackle in 2001, playing behind veterans Eric Manning and Dwan Edwards...he played in the first 10 games of the season and did not play in the season finale against Oregon...he produced a total of 25 defensive points during the season...James had nine tackles and two tackles for loss...he played at Fresno State but did not produce any defensive points...produced one tackle at New Mexico State...had a solo tackle at home vs. UCLA...contributed one tackle at Washington State...blanked for defensive points at home vs. Arizona and at Arizona State the following week...produced one tackle at home against California...accounted for one tackle and a tackle for loss at USC...had his season and career-high 10 points vs. Washington with three tackles and a tackle for loss...added one tackle vs. Northern Arizona...James reported to Oregon State for the first time when fall camp opened for newcomers on August 6…however, James missed the first two weeks of fall camp while waiting for his academic records to be cleared...by missing the first two weeks of fall camp, James was behind in conditioning and in practice time...James was initially listed No. 3 on the depth chart at left tackle, but he worked his way to No. 2.
COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS, Eureka, CA—Selected second team All-American by J.C. Grid-Wire…played in 10 of 11 games for the Corsairs as a sophomore and had 34 solo tackles, 16 tackles for losses of 66 yards, seven sacks for 39 yards, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and two blocked kicks…he returned a blocked PAT for a 2-point defensive conversion…named team’s MVP as a defensive tackle and top defensive player on his squad…a first-team all-league (Mid-Empire) selection, a first-team all-state pick among California junior colleges…served as team captain in 2000…he was also a first-team all-league pick as a freshman…College of the Redwoods posted a 9-2 record in 2000 and participated in the Capital Shrine Bowl in Sacramento…played for Coach Dave Banducci… “He made things happen for us,” said Banducci. “If we wanted a sack, he got it. If we wanted a kick blocked, he did it. If we had to get the ball back, he got it back for us. In my opinion, James was the top defensive lineman in the state.”
