Playing for Coach Riley and his new staff and a chance to be a part of and contribute to a turnaround in the OSU football program. But, most of all, fulfilling my dream and goal of playing big time college football, which is fun, and being able to get my college degree. This is great."
OSU—(2001—Senior)—Nick enters his senior year having played briefly in two games with one pass completion in one attempt for 14 yards…he entered spring drills attempting to nail the backup quarterback position behind Jonathan Smith…he was in a four-way battle with Shayne House and redshirt freshmen Ryan Kanekeberg and Adam Rothenfluh…Nick will return to fall camp listed No. 2 on the depth chart, based mainly on his performance in the final Spring Game…he led the winning Black squad to a 17-0 victory…he threw a 39-yard TD pass to James Newson in the game…he completed 7 of 15 passes for 91 yards and was not intercepted…in the first spring scrimmage, Nick completed one pass in six attempts for 27 yards…he was 8-of-15 for 110 yards in the second scrimmage and was intercepted one time…Nick has the advantage of more experience than the other four quarterbacks…the battle for the backup spot will continue once fall camp opens…Nick posted weightlifting bests of 275 in the bench press and 360 in the squat.

(1998-Redshirt Freshman)--Nick is still a very young quarterback and the redshirt year certainly helped him to develop...entered spring drills as the No. 2 quarterback behind 1997 backup, Tyler Tomich...Nick, like Tomich and Jonathan Smith, had his moments during the spring and did some good things...Nick had to quarterback the No. 2 offense against the No. 1 defense in OSU's three scrimmages and, therefore, took the brunt of the Beavers' No. 1 defensive unit, thus his numbers were not great...in the first scrimmage, he was 9 of 19 for 200 yards and 1 touchdown...in scrimmage No. 2, he was 2 of 11 for 75 yards and in the spring game, he was 7 for 25 and 140 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 interception...Nick reported to fall camp listed as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart...with Terrance Bryant joining the quarterback picture at the start of fall camp, Nick fell to No. 4 on the depth chart and did not play in 1998.

I believe if he continues to grow and mature that Oregon State will have gotten the hidden jewel of all Southern California quarterbacks. The thing I like about him is that he played very big in big games. He has great character and a whole lot of potential. He wears a 13 1/2 shoe now and has not stopped growing."...in four playoff games as a senior, Nick passed for 854 yards and 10 touchdowns, including a 303-yard, 4 touchdown game vs. Long Beach Poly in the semifinals, where he completed 15 of 24 passes before a sold out stadium of 10,000...he passed for 136 yards and 1 touchdown in the Division I championship game in which Mater Dei defeated Loyola of Los Angeles 17-10...selected OSU over Utah State.
