PERSONAL—Born 8/18/80 in Seattle, WA...son of Bart and Cindy Tuma...his father is an imaging specialist and his mother works in sales...entered OSU with a 3.56 GPA...Erik is in the College of Business and is a business administration major...entered OSU as a walk-on player...has two younger sisters, Shannon, 19; and Courtney, 13...member of the National Honor Society at Beaverton High School...five of his 1997 Beaverton teammates will be playing college football this fall, Taylor Barton, Washington; Aaron Fausett, Vanderbilt; Tanner Cole, Portland State; Jesse Levin, Idaho State; and Eric Kruger, Montana...Sam Mills is his favorite athlete...playing in the Class 4A state championship game was his top athletic thrill as a prep athlete...selected OSU because, “I want to be a part of the turnaround at OSU.”
OSU—(2002—Senior)—Erik has played in 35 straight games for OSU and will likely get his first collegiate start when the Beavers open the season against Eastern Kentucky...in three years as an understudy linebacker and key special teams player, Erik has produced 41 defensive points on 19 tackles, including 11 solo...Erik, a former walk-on who was put on scholarship at the start of his junior season, opened spring drills as the No. 1 weak linebacker and a lot of people probably felt that someone would beat him out of the No. 1 spot...in addition to his toughness, Erik is smart and really understands the game...as a result, he reads and anticipates very well...he held off all challengers in the spring and will report to fall camp as the No. 1 weak linebacker...during winter conditioning, Erik posted weightlifting bests of 455 in the back squat, 305 in the bench press, 325 in the power clean and 259 in the push press...his top vertical jump mark was 32 inches.
(2001—Junior)—Erik, who had played in 24 games in two years as a walk-on, was put on scholarship for the start of his junior season in 2001...he played in all 11 games in 2001, primarily on special teams, but also as a backup weak linebacker...Erik produced 23 defensive points in 2001 on 11 tackles, six solo...he scored defensive points in eight of 11 games, failing to score only in games at Fresno State, ASU and USC...with James Allen being held out of spring drills, Erik spent the entire spring as the No. 1 weak linebacker and he had an outstanding spring…Erik was one of the most hard-nosed players on the OSU roster…during the spring he was a solid player and made very few mistakes…in the winter conditioning program, Erik posted lifting bests of 315 in the bench press, 308.6 in the power clean and 485 in the squat.
(2000—Sophomore)—Erik played in all 12 games as a backup strong linebacker, but mainly on special teams where he excelled as a freshman and sophomore…Erik produced 14 defensive points on the season, coming on four solo tackles and an two assists…he had a pair of tackles against Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl…he did an outstanding job on the punt and kickoff return teams, plus the punt and kickoff cover teams…he started spring drills as the No. 3 middle linebacker and he completed spring drills as the No. 3 strong linebacker...he posted the seventh best back squat lift on the squad at 465 pounds...he also had the fourth best power clean lift on the team at 302 and his bench press mark was 300 pounds.
(1999—Redshirt Freshman)k earned a letter by playing in all 12 games in 1999, mostly on special teams...he produced four defensive points with a pair of tackles...Erik redshirted during the 1998 season and reported to spring drills listed No. 3 on the depth chart at strong linebacker...Erik remained in the same position following spring drills and reported to fall camp listed No. 3 at strong linebacker...in the final spring game, Erik had two solo tackles for the winning White team...in the weight room, Erik produced personal bests of 355 pounds in the hang clean, 310 in the bench press, 450 in the back squat and 260 in the incline...posted a vertical jump best of 32.50 inches.
(1998—Freshman)Erik reported to OSU for the start of fall camp in August as a walk-on and he spent the 1998 season as a redshirt middle linebacker.
BEAVERTON HIGH SCHOOL, Beaverton, OR—(1995-97)—Erik was a two-year starter at middle linebacker and offensive guard for Coach Faustin Riley...Beaverton was 10-2 his junior year and 13-1 his senior year...also lettered in track and field as a shot put and discus competitor...as a senior, Erik was a first-team all-state selection (Oregonian) as an offensive guard and linebacker...as a junior, Erik was a third-team all-state selection (Oregonian) at offensive guard and linebacker...he was a first-team all-metro pick at both positions as a senior and third team at both positions as a junior...he was the Beaverton team captain as a junior and senior...selected to play in the North-South All-Star game in July 1998...broke Beaverton records in weightlifting for the squat (500 pounds) and clean (300 pounds) as a senior...his best game as a senior was against Tigard in the Metro League championship game when he had 10 solo tackles, one sack, three quarterback hurries, forced a fumble and deflected a pass in a 42-14 victory.
