Beginning her second year as an assistant coach at Oregon State, Sabrina Hernandez is no stranger to the volleyball community.
Hernandez was an All-American setter at Long Beach State, where she played collegiately from 1989-1992. She earned All-America honors as a junior and senior, and the 49ers won the NCAA championship in 1989. Long Beach State also advanced to the final four in 1991 and 1992.
She ranks in the top 10 at LBSU for career assists, service aces and digs and holds the school record for single-match assists.
Hernandez served as club director and coach of the 18-under team at Club Long Beach from 1997 until joining the OSU staff in 1999. She is well connected in the club volleyball circuit, which will assist her in her recruiting duties with the program. Her other administrative duties include coordinating team travel and overseeing home game management. She is also responsible for organizing summer camps at Oregon State.
As the lead setter coach, Hernandez provides valuable input regarding offensive system development. A former junior high school special education teacher, Sabrina’s patience as a teacher is also seen in the gym.
In addition to her collegiate competition, Hernandez played professionally in 1996 and 1997. She played for the Colorado Thunder of the NVA Professional League from Dec. 96-May 97 and helped the team to the NVA Championships. She also played professional beach volleyball for the four-person NORELCO team in May and June of 1997.
Hernandez received a bachelor’s degree in history from Long Beach State in 1994.
