Cynthia Castro, formerly Atencio, begins her third year on Oregon State's coaching staff after a collegiate running career that saw her earn a NCAA Championship appearance and Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic honors while at Arizona State between 1999 and 2003. Castro is currently working toward her masters degree in Public Health at OSU.
"Cynthia has moved into our top assistant," OSU head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "She wants to be a Division I coach someday, and I'm really excited about the familiarity that the girls have with her in the program."
Castro's career at ASU was hampered by injuries, but as a freshman she placed 46th in the NCAA Championships, helping ASU to a sixth place team finish (the second highest placing ever in school history). Castro graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in Anthropology and Spanish from Arizona State. While at ASU, conducted several research projects pertaining to minority health disparities. Before arriving to OSU, Castro served as a research study coordinator at the University of Washington and was a health services intern for the U.S. DHSS Office on Women's Health Region X.
Castro lettered in both track and soccer at Richland High in Richland, Wash., placing in the state's top five in the 3200 and 1600 meters a total of seven times. Castro holds school records in the 1600 and 3200 meters at Richland High. She captained Richland to a state soccer title in 1999, competed in Premier League 1 Soccer, and was on the Washington state Olympic Development team for four years.
She was married to David Castro in August 2005. Husband David is a doctoral candidate in OSU's Toxicology Program. Cynthia comes from a close family consisting of one sister, four brothers and her parents, Eutimio and Oksu Atencio. Castro enjoys traveling, soccer, cooking and the outdoors.
