CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's golf team and senior Alex Moore survived windy conditions at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., on Tuesday and enter Wednesday's final round in a tie for second place on both the team and individual leaderboard.
The average team score in the second round at the par-71, 6,757-yard Brookside Country Club was 300.00, compared to an average of 284.08 in Monday's opening round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament. But the Beavers scrambled all day and got a 1-under 70 from Moore to sit in a tie for second with Nevada at 7-over 575 and only two strokes behind Colorado State at 5-over 573.
"The story today was the wind," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "For the first nine holes we handled it pretty well, and then with five holes to go, we started letting our emotions get the best of us. With that being said, we are in position to have a chance to win tomorrow. To be in this position with two of our three horses, Nick and Dave, not playing their best, one would believe the odds are in our favor for them to do something great tomorrow."
After opening the 2011-12 season with a 10-over 82, Moore has shown the talent that made him an All-American last season by posting three consecutive rounds in the 60's and fighting adverse conditions on Tuesday to finish with the third best round of anyone in the 12-team field. He is tied for second with Kirby Pettitt of Colorado State with a 4-under 138 and only stroke back of Kevin Lucas of Nevada at 5-under 137. The three leaders will be paired together on Wednesday with a 9:10 a.m. tee time on the first hole.
"Alex was great today," Reehoorn said. "To make just two bogeys in those conditions tells me he really did a great job of controlling his ball and managing his game. I know he is excited for tomorrow. He has had a lot of experience being in the thick of things with one round to go and I would expect him to do something special. He's got a low one in him."
Moore has been in this position before after holding the clubhouse lead heading into the final round in three tournaments last season. A victory would be the first outright win of his career after sharing medalist honors at the 2011 Pac-10 Championships before losing on the seventh hole of a sudden-death playoff to Martin Trainer of USC.
Freshman Scott Kim continued his steady play with a 3-over 74 on Tuesday and is tied for 17th with a 3-over 145, while junior Matt Rawitzer followed up his 3-under 68 in the opening round with a 5-over 76 on Tuesday and is tied for 14th with a 2-over 144. The Beavers' leaders in scoring average entering the Pacific Invitational, David Fink and Nick Sherwood, are both tied for 35th with a 7-over 149.
The last time Oregon State won a team title was the fall of 2009 at the Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis, Ore., a tournament they won three consecutive years. Their last tournament win outside of Corvallis was the rain-shortened Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash., in the fall of 2007 and their last full tournament win somewhere other than Corvallis came in the fall of 2004 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.
The final round begins with tee times at 8 a.m. on Wednesday from the first and 10th holes and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
