Sherwood Fires 3-Under 69 To Lead Beavers At The Prestige

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior Nick Sherwood shot a bogey-free 3-under 69 at The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., on Sunday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team in the first round of their opening tournament of the fall season.
Sherwood is tied for eighth after carding birdies on the par-5 12th, par-4 15th and par-5 16th hole at the par-72, 7,156-yard Greg Norman Course at PGA West. As a team, the Beavers shot a 6-over 294 and sit in a tie for 10th place among the 16-team field after the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole event.
"We were pretty up and down today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "We started off slow and then took advantage of the easy holes, but we had some bad breaks on 17 and 18 that hurt us. We need to bounce back and maintain our momentum. There's a part of the course that's pretty easy where we can make some birdies. But we have to play better on the tough holes."
Sophomore David Fink had a team-best six birdies and finished with a 1-under 71, while freshman Scott Kim shot an even-par 72 that included an eagle and three birdies. Seniors Alex Moore and Casey King both finished with a 10-over 82.
"It was a great start for Nick," Reehoorn said. "He's playing with a lot of confidence. He believes he's good and he's out there doing what he should be doing. I was happy with how Scott Kim played. It's exciting a freshman can shoot 72 in his first collegiate round of golf."
