Moore Fires 6-under 65, Beavs Finish Seventh At Alister MacKenzie

Oct. 18, 2011
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior Alex Moore fired a 6-under 65 to match the second best under-par round of his collegiate career and lead the Oregon State men's golf team to a seventh place finish at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif., on Tuesday.
Moore had seven birdies and just one bogey at the par-71, 6,718-yard Meadow Club to equal the 6-under 65 he shot in the second round at last year's Alister MacKenzie Invitational. It's the 16th time in his career he's shot a round in the 60's and is three strokes off the school-record 9-under 63 he shot at the Oregon Duck Invitational last season.
"If we are going to achieve what we want this year, Alex will play a huge part in that," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It was good to see him shoot a low number today and get back on track. He played a solid round and has the momentum and confidence going into the next tournament."
Oregon State shot its best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 6-under 278 to finish seventh in the 16-team field with a 12-under 281-281-278--840 for the 12th best three-round tournament score in school history. The Beavers were in ninth place after 36 holes on Monday and jumped out to a quick start on Tuesday to move up the leader board.
"We played a lot better today and it was good to see," Reehoorn said. "We've been too focused on our results so we tried to focus today on the process and just let the scores work themselves out. We can see some positives from today and hopefully we can take some of that from today to help us in the next tournament."
Moore led the Beavers with a 7-under 72-69-65--206 for a tie for 12th place, while sophomore David Fink posted his fourth under-par round this season with a 2-under 69 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 31st with a 2-under 72-70-69--211.
Junior Nick Chianello finished in a tie for 34th in his first tournament for Oregon State with a 1-under 71-68-73--212, junior Nick Sherwood shot a 2-over 70-74-71--215 for a tie for 44th and senior Jonnie Motomochi finished with a 4-over 68-75-74--217 for a tie for 52nd.
Moore started on the back nine and had birdies on the par-4 12th, par-3 14th, par-5 15th and par-4 17th holes and added a birdie after he made the turn on the par-4 third before making his only bogey of the day on the par-4 fourth hole. He added birdies on the par-4 sixth and seventh holes for his 6-under 65.
Fink had 11 birdies in the three rounds, including four on Tuesday, while Chianello and Motomochi tied for the second best tournament scoring round on the team with a 3-under 68 (Chianello in the second round and Motomochi in the first).
The Beavers will compete in their final tournament of the fall season Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.
