Women's Soccer Opens Spring with Win

CORVALLIS, Ore. The Oregon State women’s soccer team opened the 2008 spring season with a 3-1 victory over Portland State in action at the Nike Campus on Saturday. The game marked the debut for new Oregon State head coach Linus Rhode.
“Overall, it was a very good effort,” Rhode said. “I was impressed with the way the team played considering it was the first outing of the spring.”
Oregon State opened the game with a goal by former standout Jodie Taylor as she connected off of a brilliant cross by Michelle Luckes to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
The score remained the same heading into halftime as the Beavers quickly extended the lead to two goals early in the second half. On a long ball from Red Nixon, Jesse Velasquez collected the pass and beat the keeper in a one-on-one situation as the Beavers grabbed a 2-0 lead.
After Portland State cut the lead in half with a goal late in the period, Oregon State managed to put the game away as Taylor scored an unassisted goal to give the Beavers an insurmountable, 3-1 victory.
Oregon State held onto the second half lead despite the fact the Beavers played a man down the entire half as Rachael Axon sat out the final 45 minutes, resting a sore hamstring.
