Corvallis, Ore Oregon State University senior football student-athlete Sammie Stroughter (straw-ter) is one of 76 individuals on the preseason watch list for the 72nd annual Maxwell Award, presented annually to the nation’s top college football player by the Maxwell Football Club of Roslyn, PA.
The Sacramento, Calif., native enters the season with 1,613 receiving yards and 876 punt return yards. He was an Associated Press Third Team All-American in 2006 as an all-purpose player after accounting for 1,293 receiving yards and returning a school record three punts for touchdowns.
Stroughter played in just three games last year after suffering a season-ending kidney injury Sept. 22 at Arizona State. He also missed the season opener for personal reasons. Stroughter was granted a medical hardship year by the Pac-10 Conference in March, thus regaining his senior season.
The Maxwell Award has been presented since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, a former college player, official and sports columnist. The award is voted on by a panel of head coaches, sportscasters, sportswriters and Maxwell Club members.
Former OSU All-American and Heisman Trophy recipient Terry Baker won the award in 1962. Oregon State, USC, UCLA and Stanford are the only Pac-10 institutions represented with Maxwell Award recipients.
The Beavers begin their quest for a third straight bowl trip Aug. 1 with the beginning of “fall” camp for the 2008 season. Oregon State opens the year Thurs., Aug. 28 at Stanford in a game that can be seen on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. or heard over the Beaver Sports Radio Network, Yahoo Sports! and Beaver Nation Online.
