Men's Golfers Qualify for US Amateur Public Links
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon State men’s golfers Alex Williams and Vincent Johnson defeated 59 other participants as the duo qualified for the United State Amateur Public Links Championship in action at the Broadmoor Golf Course on Sunday.
Williams and Johnson each tied with 36-hole scores of 139 as the pair defeated Arthur Kim in a three-way playoff to advance to the championship. The pair will travel to Aurora, Colo., as the championship opens on Monday, July 14, at the Murphy Creek Golf Course.
During qualifying play, Williams opened with a 70 on the first 18 and followed with a total of 69 on the final 18 holes in the afternoon to force a play-off. Johnson got off to a fast start with a 68 and followed with a round of 71 as a trio of golfers finished with a total of 139, forcing a playoff for the two available spots.
Oregon State assistant golf coach Tim Sundseth just missed out on a chance to play at the championship as he shot 144 (74-70) to finish just five shots back.
Entering the qualifier, Sundseth was coming off a grueling stretch of golf as the Beavers assistant coach played 36 holes for four straight days as he advanced to the finals of the 99th Annual Oregon Amateur. Sundseth fell to Blake Seabaugh on the first hole of sudden death during Saturday’s championship.
