Men's Golf Shines at Oregon Amateur

BEND, Ore. The Oregon State men’s golf team put on a terrific performance at the 99th Oregon Amateur Championship as the Beavers had three players advance to the quarterfinals in addition to assistant coach Tim Sundseth, who advanced to the championship round in action at the Bend Golf and Country Club on Friday.
It was coach against player in one semifinal match Friday as Sundseth defeated junior Scott Barton of Bend (4 and 3).
Prior to the meeting with Barton, Sundseth advanced with victories over Mark Harmon of Lake Oswego (4 and 3), Ted Whitney of Eugene (19th hole), Isaiah Telles of Tualatin (2 and 1) and Robbie Ziegler of Canby (1 up). He just completed his first season at OSU as a full-time coach following one year as a volunteer coach. Sundseth lettered two seasons (2002 and ’03) after transferring from Central Oregon Community College.
Barton is a graduate of Sisters High School, where he tied for second at the 2006 3A state tournament and was the district medalist. The two-year letterman at OSU reached the round of 32 at the 2006 Oregon Amateur and played in the 2005 U.S. Junior Amateur. Barton reached the semis with victories over Eric Grimberg of Portland (21st hole), Jack Dukeminier of Eugene (3 and 2), fellow OSU teammate Alex Williams of Vancouver, Wash., (3 and 2) and Andrew Vijarro of Bend (5 and 4).
In addition to Barton, OSU redshirt-freshman Alexander Moore of Richland, Wash., advanced to the quarterfinals before being defeated by Jake Wagner of Portland. Vincent Johnson also had a strong showing at the tournament as the senior advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Blake Seabaugh in sudden death on the 22nd hole.
Seabaugh eventually advanced to the championship and will face Sundseth in the finals with the 36-hole contest slated for Saturday, June 21.
