Twenty OSU Rowers Earn Academic Recognition

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. A total of 20 Oregon State student-athletes have been named to the various men’s and women’s rowing Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic teams announced by Commissioner Tom Hansen Thursday.
On the women’s side, seniors Becca Franceschi (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic HS), Claire Hanway (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit HS), Holly Simmons (Elgin, Ore./Elgin HS) and Kaylie Towne (Myrtle Point, Ore./Myrtle Point HS) and juniors Jane Ivey (Nelson, New Zealand), Sarah Jarrett (Portland, Ore./Benson HS) and Melissa Penwell (Eugene, Ore./Churchill HS) made the first team. Senior Britnie Jones (Camarillo, Calif.), juniors Katie Humm (Lake Oswego, Ore./Jesuit HS) and Sarah Joos (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis HS) and sophomore Celia Magistrale (Portland, Ore./David Douglas HS) received second team honors. Junior Alina Haberstroh (Pendleton, Ore./Pendleton HS) was honorable mention.
Franceschi, Hanway and Towne earned her third consecutive first team honor, while Ivey and Penwell each received first team recognition for the second time. Humm was recognized on the second team for the second year in a row and Joos and Jones were recognized the second and third times overall.
OSU’s men team put the most rowers on the first team squad in the conference for the second year in a row with seven. Earning all-academic honors for the Beavers were seniors George Dirth (Manchester, N.H.), James Fulmer (Atlantic City, N.J.), Will Gustafson (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley HS), Jeff Halleck (Salem, Ore./Sprague HS) and Justin Wagner (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS), junior Jon Young (Salem, Ore./Salem Academy) and sophomore Jeremy Sugden (White City, Ore./Crater HS). Seniors Dan Armitage (Ashland, Ore./Ashland HS) and Todd West (Beaverton, Ore./Beaverton HS) earned second team honors.
This marks the third time that Dirth, Halleck and Wagner have received first team honors while Gustafson and Young are two-time recipients. This marks the second time that Armitage has been honored by the conference.
Only one school, California, had more athletes earn first and second team all-academic recognition this season.
