Kelvin Koong - Oregon State University Athletics

L.J. “Kelvin” Koong is in his fourth year as OSU’s faculty representative to the Pacific-10 Conference and the NCAA. He was appointed to this position in January of 2005 by OSU President Dr. Edward Ray. He also serves the President of the Pac-10 Conference for 2008-09.

Dr. Koong is a professor of animal sciences and has held a variety of administrative posts since arriving on campus in 1987. He has served as Associate Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, Head of the Department of Animal Sciences and Interim Dean and Director of the OSU Extension Service.

Koong, who is the author of numerous publications, has been honored with Distinguished Service Awards from the Western Section of the American Society of Animal Science, the Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Farm Bureau. He was the recipient of the Boss of the Year Award from OSU’s Office Personnel Association in 2001.

Koong graduated from National Taiwan University in 1964 and later earned a master’s in animal science in 1968 and Ph.D. in biomathematics in 1973, both from North Carolina State University.

He and his wife, Janet, have three sons – Dennis, Peter and Andrew. The Koongs also have three grandchildren, Jacob, Nicole and Noah.
