Nygren Gets First Career Win In Victory Over Pilots

CORVALLIS, Ore. James Nygren posted his first career win in the Oregon State baseball team’s 4-1 victory over Portland Wednesday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
The game was originally started April 15 at PGE Park in Portland but was suspended in the fourth inning due to rain.
Nygren went three weeks in between pitches in the game and went a full seven innings, scattering three hits and a run. He totaled four strikeouts and a walk and improved to 1-1 this season.
In his first appearance in the game, on April 15, he went three innings, facing just 10 batters and throwing 58 pitches. He did not allow a hit in the first part of the outing and struck out two.
On Wednesday, he picked up where he left off, allowing just three hits and a run. He threw 50 pitches in Wednesday’s outing to total 108 overall and struck out two while walking one.
Jason Ogata led Oregon State (22-18 overall) with two hits and an RBI, while Daniel Robertson and Jordan Lennerton each drove in a run.
The Beavers held a 3-0 lead before the teams even arrived at the ballpark Wednesday. The game was picked up in the bottom of the fourth with Oregon State holding a 3-0 advantage.
Lennerton immediately gave the Beavers a 4-0 lead, hitting his fourth home run of the season in the fifth.
Portland (19-27) immediately made it 4-1 in the fifth when Riley Hendricks tripled down the right field line, scoring Cory Wiltshire.
Nygren and OSU relievers Kraig Sitton, Taylor Starr and Kevin Rhoderick held Portland scoreless for the final four innings. Rhoderick picked up his 10th save of the season after striking out two in an inning of work.

Drew George scored on a wild pitch, Daniel Robertson plated Jordan Lennerton on a sacrifice fly to center and Jason Ogata drove in a run on a slow roller down the third base line that hugged the foul line.
Thorpe did not throw on Wednesday but was still credited with the loss because of the four innings he threw at PGE Park. He allowed six hits and three runs and dropped to 2-3 this season.
Owen Jones was the first pitcher to throw for the Pilots Wednesday, followed by Tyler Thompson and Matthew Lange.
