Softball Drops Close 1-0 Decision to Portland State

Portland, Ore. It was a pitcher’s duel at Erv Lind Stadium with sophomore pitcher (Eugene, Ore.) giving up only three hits, all in the fifth inning, but Oregon State came up short in the 1-0 loss to Portland State on Tuesday evening.
Oregon State (26-30) left three runners, earning two hits and with three Viking errors, while Portland State (31-27) reached all three runners in the fifth inning.
Oregon State got a runner in scoring position in the first inning in leadoff batter junior (Tustin, Calif.), who reached on an error by pitcher Mandy Hill before advancing to second on a throwing error by catcher Kristin Wilson on a failed pickoff attempt.
Freshman (Tustin, Calif.) recorded the Beavers’ first hit in the top of the third, singling through the left side before advancing to second on sister, junior ’s (Tustin, Calif.) sacrifice bunt down the first base line. But M. Lowe was left as the inning closed as the second Oregon State runner left in the game.
After retiring 16 straight with four strikeouts, Dyer reached on Portland State’s third error of the game after a hard hit ball down the first base line was dropped by the Viking’s Jana Rae Slayton. Dyer earned her first stolen base of the season on the next at bat but the game remained scoreless in the middle of the fifth.
Portland State scored in the bottom of the fifth after Slayton led off triple on the first pitch seen to right center before scoring on Hill’s one-out RBI single. The Vikings earned another single from K. Wilson but both were left as the inning ended.
The Beavers quickly retired all three batters faced in the sixth, throwing four total pitches before moving into the top of the seventh, where junior (Camarillo, Calif.) earned the other Oregon State on a one-out single up the middle, but with the go-ahead run at the plate, a double play ended the Beavers’ rally attempt.
Dyer was charged with the complete-game loss with her record now sitting at 17-24, while Hill improves to 18-15 with the win.
Oregon State heads back to the OSU Softball Complex to host No. 24 Washington on Thursday, May 8. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
