Men's Golf Earns NCAA Bid

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. Less than a week after finishing eighth at the Pac-10 Conference Men’s Golf Championship, the Oregon State men’s golf team earned a berth into the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship as the Beavers were selected to participate in the NCAA Western Regional, to be held at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., May 15-17.
The Beavers are seeded No. 14 in the West Regional and hope to qualify for the NCAA National Championship. The top ten teams in the regional advance to the NCAA finals, to be held May 28-31 on the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
Last year, the Beavers were tied with Wake Forest and East Tennessee State for ninth place at the regional and just missed out on a chance to advance to the NCAA National Championship after falling in a tiebreaker.
Oregon State has played at the Gold Mountain Golf Club once this year when they took home first place at the Husky Invitational.
The Beavers are led by senior James Allenby who took home his first career individual win at the Husky Invitational and is rewriting the Oregon State record books. Allenby is currently ranked 32nd according to the Golfweek/Sagarin performance index.
With the Beavers’ previous success at the Golf Mountain Golf Club, they are in position to make a push for nationals.
Stanford University’s men’s golf team won the 2007 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships, capturing their first NCAA title since 1994 and eighth overall. The Cardinal finished with a 12-stroke victory over the University of Georgia (1,121), Lamar University (1,125) and University of North Carolina at Charlotte (1,125).
Jamie Lovemark, University of Southern California, finished with a 9-under 271 and became the first USC men’s golfer to win the NCAA individual championships in 26 years.
The tournament was held at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Virginia, and was hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.
