Beavers Race Tough Against No.3 Washington State
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Oregon State women’s crew took four of six races from No. 3 Washington State in a dual regatta on Saturday, May 3 at Pullman, Wash.
The Second Varsity 8+ crew gave the Beavers their first win of the day, defeating the Cougars in a close race that saw Oregon State maintain a slight lead finish with a 5.28.
Oregon State’s Varsity 4+ crew defeated both Cougar crews in their heat, as the Beavers raced to a 9.4-second victory over the first of two Washington State V4+ crews. The Second Novice 8+ race went much the same way, as the Beavers raced neck-and-neck with the first of two Cougar crew’s in the head. Oregon State was able to slowly pull away and finish with a 3.25-second lead over Washington State. The race of the day came in the Novice 8+ heat. Both boats traded leads throughout the race; however neither crew could pull ahead. The Cougars used a push in the last 500-meters to narrowly edge the Beaver crew by 0.23-seconds. Oregon State recorded its fourth victory of the day in the Second Novice 8+ heat. The Beavers got off to a quick start against the Cougars, building a strong lead that they held on to for the 21.3 second victory. “Overall, I was pleased with the day,” said Oregon State head coach Emily Ford. “I especially want to recognize the efforts of the Second Varsity 4+ and the Second Novice 8+. Today was the last race for both of those crews and they both had great races. The individuals in those crews have helped push this team all season and I have the utmost respect for them as a result.” The Beavers could not come up with the upset of the No. 3 ranked Washington State Varsity 8+ crew. Although the two boats were close the entire race, the Cougars were able to hold on to a slight edge and finish with a 3.73-second margin of victory. The Washington State dual marks the end of the regular season for the Beavers crew. Oregon State’s next date on the schedule is the Pac-10 Championships, held on May 18 at Rancho Cordova, Calif.
