No. 14 Beavers Take 4th at Pac-10 Championships

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. – The Oregon State men’s crew raced to a fourth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships Sunday at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
The Beavers' Varsity 8+ crew got off to a solid start in the finals, breaking out in fourth place, just 2-seconds off the lead after the first 500-meters. OSU settled into that position as the Washington (No. 1), Stanford (No. 7), and California (No. 8) crews pulled away over the rest of the course. The Beavers finished 9.1-seconds behind third place Stanford and 14.1-seconds ahead of the crew from UCLA.
The Junior Varsity 8+ crew found itself in third place behind Washington and California after the first 500-meters. The positions of the crews did not change through the rest of the race, as the Beavers finished in third place ahead of UCLA.
Oregon State’s Freshman 8+ crew found itself in fourth at the 500-meter mark, sandwiched between crews from Stanford and UCLA. As the race went on, the Beavers pulled away from the Bruins crew, but were unable to catch Stanford and came across the finish line 10.2-seconds behind the Cardinal.
As a team, the Beavers earned 42 points and a tie for third place. However, the tiebreaker went to Stanford due to their narrow win in the V8+ race. No. 1 Washington earned 72 points for the Pac-10 championship and was followed by No. 8 California with 63.
"It was a bit of a tough day for us," head coach Steve Todd said. "We did not quite race at the level we have been practicing and I think that that was disappointing for our team."
The Beavers will now wait for an invitation to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships that will be held June 5-7 at Cherry Hill, N.J. Log on to OSUBeavers.com for up-to-date news on Oregon State men’s crew.
