Stutes Throws Complete Game In Series Opener, Defeats UCLA 10-1
CORVALLIS, Ore. –Starting pitcher Mike Stutes threw a Oregon State’s first complete game in nearly two seasons, striking out nine as the Beavers took the first game of the three game series against UCLA, 10 -1, Friday night in front of 2,436 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
Stutes scattered four hits and a run to improve to 3-6 this season. His nine strikeouts gave him 275 for his Oregon State career, surpassing Dallas Buck for second all-time in school history. He needs 24 to tie Jonah Nickerson for most in an OSU uniform.
Stutes’ complete-game effort was the team’s first since Nickerson went the distance on May 20, 2006 in Oregon State’s 10-2 win at Washington State.
“This was a quality start for Mike tonight,” head coach Pat Casey said. “He was very consistent and got out of a few jams. The offense really did its job supporting him and we had a good defensive night.”
Stutes ran in to trouble early in the second, putting runners on first and third with one out. But, he got a timely double play to end the inning. The only run Stutes allowed came in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly.
Offensively, the Beavers (23-18 overall, 10-9 Pacific-10 Conference) rapped out 10 hits and walked nine times.
Erik Ammon, in his 12th start of the season, went 2-for-3 with three RBI. He hit a two run single to center field in the fourth inning, driving in two, and drove in one more in the bottom of the eighth with a single to right field, scoring John Wallace. For Ammon, it was his first multiple-hit and multiple-RBI efforts of the season.
Daniel Robertson went 1-for-5 with one run scored and drove in two in the second inning with a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Garrett Nash and Braden Wells. The Beavers took a commanding lead in the second with six runs, aided by five UCLA walks and a hit by pitch.
Ryan Ortiz added drove in one run in the second with a bases-loaded walk and another in the seventh inning on a single to right field. He finished the game 1-for-4 with one run scored.
Lonnie Lechelt also finished with two RBI, walking once in a 1-for-4 night.
UCLA (24-22, 7-9) starting pitcher Tim Murphy lasted only 1 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on one hit while walking six. His record dropped to 3-6 on the season.
The Beavers scored six runs in the second, two in the fourth, one in the seventh and one in the eighth.

OSU Notes: Erik Ammon had his first multiple hit game of the season going 2-for-3 and had his first multiple RBI game of the season, driving in three runs ... Jason Ogata increased his hitting streak to three games with a single in the fourth ... Daniel Robertson extended his season-high hit streak to eight games with a single in the second inning ... With Erik Ammon’s multiple hit game, he became the 13th Beaver to have more than one hit in a single game this season ... The Beavers had 14 players with at least one multiple-hit effort last year ... Dale Solomon came into the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth and lined a first-pitch fastball down the line in left field for a stand up double for his second hit this season.
