Men's Golf Travels to Pac-10 Championships

CORVALLIS, Ore. The Oregon State men’s golf team travels this weekend to compete at the 49th Pacific-10 Conference Championship as the Beavers open play on Monday, April 28.
The 72-hole championship, hosted by Cal, runs Monday through Wednesday, April 28-30 at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif. The course is par-71 and is 6,686 yards long. The opening two rounds will be Monday with a 7:30 a.m. start time. The third round will be Tuesday and the final round will be Wednesday.
The championship consists of all Pac-10 teams and some of the best teams in the country. As of April 21, the Golfweek/Sagarin Index has four teams in the Top-25 and two more in the Top-50, placing Oregon State at No. 44.
“The field is great with USC, UCLA and Stanford all ranked in the top seven in the country,” head coach Brian Watts said. “We have the talent and if we can put it all together we can make a great run for the title. We feel that the championship is really up for grabs this year with four or five teams that could possibly bring home the trophy.”
The Beavers are sending James Allenby, Diego Velasquez, Alex Williams, Vincent Johnson, Tyler Simpson, and Paul Peterson to compete in the event. In the Pac-10 Championship, each team sends six players but the five lowest scores are counted into the team total.
“We’re looking forward to Pac-10’s at the Meadow Club,” Watts said. “We’ve had a lot of success there the past several years and the golf course sets up for us quite well. It’s an Alister Mackenzie design so it’s all about putting and the short game. We will spend all our time this week in practice on and around the greens.”
Oregon State finished seventh last year at the event with a four round total of 1,458. The Beavers were led by James Allenby who finished tied for 14th after shooting a 287.
Historically, Oregon State has had two winning individuals at the Pac-10 Championship the last being Scott Masingill in 1971. Oregon State has never won a team title.
In Oregon State’s last event, it took eighth place at the U.S. Intercollegiate hosted by Stanford University.
