Beavers Drop 5-1, 8-4 Decisions to No. 1 Sun Devils
Tempe, Ariz. – It was a pitcher’s duel through most of game three against No. 1 Arizona State, but a rough sixth inning for Oregon State boosted the Sun Devils over the Beavers in a final 5-1 decision on Friday evening at Farrington Stadium.
Oregon State (26-23, 4-8 Pac-10) left six runners on, led by freshman ’s (Vista, Calif.) three walks, but Arizona State (50-3, 12-1 Pac-10) tallied seven hits, including two home runs.
Sophomore (Eugene, Ore.) threw nearly four perfect innings, retiring 11 straight batters, before giving up the game’s first hit to Krista Donnenwirth, who hit a solo shot over right center to put the Sun Devils up 1-0.
Junior (Tustin, Calif.) earned Oregon State’s only hit of the game in the top of the fifth with a two-out double to right field before reaching on a throwing error by pitcher Katie Burkhart with two outs in the top of the seventh with sophomore (Chula Vista, Calif.) scoring from second.
Arizona State scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth behind Mindy Cowles’ two-run home run over center field.
Dyer was charged with the loss after pitching 5.1 innings, making her record 17-17, while Burkhart recorded her second win of the day, boosting her record to 29-3.
The Beavers finished its game against the Sun Devils that was suspended on Sunday, Apr. 6 with Arizona State up 6-4, playing the seventh inning with the final score standing at 8-4.
Arizona State scored a pair of runs on Kristen Miller’s home run over right field, putting ASU up 8-4. Junior (Camarillo, Calif.) tallied a single for the Beavers but was left at first as the game ended.
Oregon State’s (Parkdale, Ore.) was charged with the loss after starting the game and pitching 3.2 innings, making her record 9-6, 0-1 Pac-10, while Burkhart earned the win after pitching 2.2 innings.
Oregon State wraps up its trip in Arizona at No. 8 Arizona on Saturday and Sunday. Game times are set for 7:00 and 12:00 p.m.
