MONMOUTH, Ore Junior Holly Thomson (Eugene, Ore.) won the 800-meters to lead the Oregon State women’s track team Friday at the Western Oregon Twilight. The Beavers competed very strong in the 800-meters, 1,500-meters and 5,000-meters at McArthur Field on a very cold and blustery evening.
“I was pleased with our performances today,” head coach Kelly Sullivan said. “Those are all of our 5k and 10k runners we dropped down a little bit. They ran well, but I think they felt a little off tonight because we worked really hard this week. Even with the hard workouts, they women ran exceptionally well tonight.”
In the 800-meters Oregon State took the top three spots in the first section and had all five runners finish in the top 10. Thomson led the way with a first place finish with a time of 2:15.50 followed shortly by Noelle Harer (Seaside, Ore.) in second at 2:15.76 and freshman Casey Masterson (Eugene, Ore.) running unattached took third with a time of 2:15.98.
Senior Jean-Marie Peterson (Canby, Ore.) and sophomore Katelyn Van Brunt (Grants Pass, Ore.) finished out the 800-meters' first section in sixth and eighth respectively.
“It was a great race for Holly Thomson, Noelle [Harer], Casey Masterson and Jean-Marie Peterson,” Sullivan said. “That ended up going really well tonight. I think the race tonight will really help them out next week in the Oregon Relays.”
Freshman Marsha Lampi (Portland, Ore.) led the way for the Beavers in the 1,500-meters capturing second place with a time of 4:43.39. Just a second behind Lampi was sophomore Hayley Oveson (La Grande, Ore.) running unattached in third place with a time of 4:44.46. Oregon State took five of the top six finishes in the section finishing two though six.
“We’re setting all kinds of PR’s at less than ideal conditions,” Sullivan said. “These are the fastest times these athletes have probably ever run in such cold weather.
“I’m pleased with their attitudes. Everybody wants to run certain times, but the thing that we’re constantly doing is we’re either winning races, or getting second, third or at least in the top bunch. When you have conditions like this and the wind is blowing sideways you can kind of lose your motivation, but they are doing a really good job of not letting that stuff get to them.”
