The highly anticipated start of the 2008-09 Oregon State men’s basketball season begins this week as the Beavers travel to Washington, D.C. to face Howard on Friday Nov. 14, at 4:00 p.m. The meeting with the Bison marks the second in history between the two schools as Oregon State’s visit to Burr Gymnasium marks the first time a Pac-10 Conference school has visited Howard.
In his debut as head coach, Craig Robinson led Oregon State to a pair of exhibition victories as the Beavers defeated Saint Martin’s, 80-76, before knocking off Concordia (Ore.) University, 82-57, in the second exhibition contest of the season.
Five players averaged in double figures over the two exhibition victories, led by Omari Johnson, who averaged a double-double with 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds over the two games while shooting 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from the field. Daniel Deane, a transfer from Utah who is eligible after sitting out last year, nearly averaged a double-double in the two exhibition contests, averaging 15.0 points and 7.5 rebounds in the two victories.
The trip to Howard marks the debut of new head coach Craig Robinson, who comes to Oregon State after two seasons at Brown. Last year at Brown, Robinson led the Bears to a school-record 19 victories and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational, marking only the fourth time in school history Brown had advanced to post-season play.
Oregon State leads the all-time series against Howard, 1-0, after defeating the Bison, 84-67, during the 2006-07 season. Howard will make a return trip to Corvallis this year on Dec. 20.
SCOUTING THE HOWARD BISON
Howard, led by head coach Gil Jackson, return 10 letterwinners and all five starters from last year’s squad that finished the season with a 6-26 overall mark and 10th-place in the MEAC with a 3-13 mark.
Eugene Myatt and Randy Hampton lead the Howard attack as Myatt averaged 14.1 points and 3.3 points per game last season. Meanwhile, Hampton averaged 11.6 points and 4.2 rebounds a year ago.
Adam Walker, a sophomore forward, made the MEAC all-rookie team last year after posting 6.1 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
The visit by Oregon State to face the Bison marks the first time a Pac-10 Conference school has played at Howard. The Bison make a return trip this season to Corvallis on Dec. 20.

The meeting between the schools mark the second in series history after Oregon State captured an 84-67 victory during the 2006-07 season.
In the initial meeting between the two schools, Josh Tarver scored 16 points, grabbed six rebounds and added six assists.
Oregon State, which never trailed, scored 10 of the first 14 points of the second half to take a 53-36 lead. An 11-0 run, capped by consecutive baskets from Roeland Schaftenaar, provided the Beavers with their biggest lead of the contest, 81-56, with 3:35 left.
Eugene Myatt registered 10 points for Howard in the loss.
OREGON STATE IN SEASON OPENERS
The Beavers have won nine of the last 12 season openers ... In 107 seasons of basketball, Oregon State is 81-26 (.759) in season openers ... Oregon State is opening on the road for only the fourth time in the last 13 seasons and the seventh time in the last 22 seasons ... In openers away from Gill Coliseum since 1939-40 (as far back as home/away records are complete), Oregon State is 39-30 (.565).

Oregon State guard/forward Seth Tarver is the leading returning scorer for the Beavers this year after he reached double figures in 16 games last season, including a career-high 23 in a win over UC Davis. He ranked second on the teamlast year with 9.6 points per game.
A high percentage of the production from last season returns for the 2008-09 campaign as Oregon State lost only two players (Marcel Jones and Sean Carter) who played in more than 10 contests a year ago. The Beavers return 74-percent of the scoring (1381-of-1858 total points), 61-percent of the rebounds (757-of-1070 total rebounds) and 86-percent of the assists (283-of-327) from a year ago.
In 31 games last season, underclassmen led the Beavers in scoring in 22 times. The lone senior on last year’s squad, Marcel Jones, led the Beavers in scoring in the other nine contests.
The game against Howard marks a homecoming for Calvin Hampton, who is a native of Fort Washington, Md. After suffering a hip injury in the off-season, Hampton has been cleared to play against the Bison.
