No. 25 OSU Marches On To Super Regionals - Oregon State University Athletics

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Oregon State’s Jason Ogata drove in four runs as the 25th-ranked Beavers beat seventh-ranked Virginia 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon to win the NCAA Charlottesville Regional baseball tournament. Joe Paterson pitched a scoreless final three innings to earn a save to go with his two wins in the tournament for OSU (42-18 overall).

With the win, the Beavers advance to the NCAA Super Regionals for the third straight season and earn the right to host the best-of-three series against Michigan. The series will be played Saturday, Sunday and, if necessary, Monday at times to be announced. OSU baseball season ticket holders have until Wednesday at 4 p.m. to reserve seats by calling 1-800-GO BEAVS or visiting the OSU Athletic Ticket Office in Gill Coliseum Room 107; after that, any remaining seats would go on sale to the general public Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Beavers won their ninth straight elimination game over two seasons, with three back-to-the-wall victories in Charlottesville coming on the heels of the six elimination games the Beavers won at the 2006 College World Series en route to the national championship.

“Our kids played their hearts out,” OSU head coach Pat Casey said. “We played a very, very good Virginia team that was battling some injuries that certainly didn’t help them out. I thought it was just going to come down to flat-out let’s-get-it-on, who’s-going-to-fight-hardest, in-the-dirt scrap. I think we’re pretty pumped up right now.”

Oregon State pushed its lead to 7-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in Virginia reliever Matt Packer’s first inning of work. With one out, Chris Hopkins chopped a single over the head of drawn-in third baseman Patrick Wingfield and Joey Wong sacrificed him to second. Darwin Barney was intentionally walked and Mike Lissman coaxed a walk to load the bases for Jason Ogata. Ogata bounced a ball up the middle that deflected off the glove of diving second baseman David Adams and scooted into centerfield for a two-run single.

The Beavers then escaped a jam in the top of the seventh inning. OSU reliever Eddie Kunz walked Tim Henry to start the inning and when Tyler Cannon singled through the right side, the Beavers turned to Joe Paterson, the winning pitcher in Monday night’s game. He got Sean Doolittle to fly out, then David Adams blooped a single down the rightfield line that loaded the bases. Beau Seabury came to the plate representing the tying run, but Paterson induced a grounder to shortstop Barney that was turned into an inning-ending double play.

OSU had gone up 5-3 with three runs in the bottom of the second inning against Virginia starter Casey Lambert and reliever Jacob Thompson. Lonnie Lechelt evened the game 3-3 when he led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run to left-centerfield against Lambert, who had pitched the final 6 2/3 innings of the Cavaliers’ 7-4, 13-inning win over the Beavers on Saturday night.

With one out, Jordan Lennerton doubled to centerfield, then Hopkins’ slow grounder was mishandled by Lambert and Lennerton stayed at second. Wong singled through the left side to load the bases and Virginia turned to Thompson, who had pitched 6 1/3 innings Saturday night. Barney lifted a sacrifice fly to right, then after Lissman walked to reload the bases, Ogata singled to right to score Hopkins but Wong was thrown out at the plate by rightfielder Tim Henry to end the inning.

Virginia had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the second inning with three runs against OSU starter Mike Stutes, who had pitched 6 1/3 innings of that Saturday night game. Beau Seabury started things with a single, then John Scaglione singled off the glove of diving second baseman Wong. With two out, Mike Mitchell walked to load the bases; a wild pitch by Stutes plated the first run, then Henry doubled down the leftfield line to drive in two more runs.

Oregon State jumped in front 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Hopkins led off with a single to right, Wong sacrificed him to second and Barney walked. Lissman then poked a drive that kicked up chalk down the rightfield line for a double that scored Hopkins and sent Barney to third; Ogata followed with a groundout that scored Barney.
