OSU Golfer Plays in PGA Minority Championship This Weekend

CORVALLIS Oregon State men's golfer is set to compete in the 21st PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship this weekend (May 11-13). The 54-hole tournament will be held at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Johnson (Portland, Ore./David Douglas HS) is second on the Beavers with a 72.86 stroke average this season. That figure currently ranks in a tie for fifth on OSU's single-season records list. He is a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports-Scholar honoree. "I'm excited to have the opportunity to play in a tournament that provides opportunities for minority college golfers," Johnson said. "The whole experience should be worthwhile. I'm looking forward to the experience and playing in hot weather. Any time I go to a tournament I look to win. I'm competitive. I just want to go out there and play and give it my best and see where I end up. "It means a lot to represent OSU. Oregon State has provided so much for me that when I put on my OSU gear, I want to go out and show what the school is all about." The PGA Minority Golf Championship will have its largest field in tournament history, featuring representatives from 38 different colleges. Nine schools have competitors taking part for the first time, including Oregon State. More than 180 golfers will take part. Johnson, who holds the school record for lowest three-round tournament score, has competed for OSU in all six spring tournaments. He missed most of the fall season while dealing with Graves' Disease, but has since made a near full recovery. A week after this event, Johnson will be competing with the Beavers at the NCAA West Regional, hosted by Arizona State on May 17-19.
