Canham Earns Academic All-America Honor - Oregon State University Athletics

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State catcher Mitch Canham was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America Baseball Team as a first-team selection Tuesday. Canham (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS), a junior majoring in Business Administration, had earlier been named to the earned a place on the Academic All-District 8 squad for the second time in his career.

To be considered for CoSIDA all-academic honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, redshirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.

Canham, a preseason All-America selection, is currently batting .345 with nine home runs and 53 runs batted in. He is also a two-time Pacific-10 All-Academic pick.

Canham is the fifth OSU baseball player to earn Academic All-America honors, following shortstop Ken Bowen (1986 and 1987), outfielder Bryan Ganter (1986 and 1987), pitcher Mason Smith (1994) and catcher Ben Bertrand (1998).

Canham and the Beavers, the defending national champions and making their third straight postseason appearance, open the four-team, double-elimination NCAA Charlottesville Regional on Friday at 5 p.m. PDT against Rutgers. The tournament, which also includes host Virginia and Lafayette, continues through at least Sunday, possibly Monday.
