No. 16 OSU Drops Series Opener To No. 7 ASU

The Beavers and Sun Devils (39-12, 15-4) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., and both of those games are sold out. The games can be heard live on KEJO-AM (1240) in the
On Friday,
“Mike pitched outstanding and Blake came in and did his job,” OSU head coach Pat Casey said. “We’ve got to win games. You’ve got to get guys on, you’ve got to move them over and you’ve got to score them. When you’re going through bumps in the road, some guys have to step up and swing the bat. That’s all there is to it. We got a great start out of our starter, he got us deep into the Friday night game, and their guy is good. We’ve just got to do a better job of putting the ball in play.”
Mike Lissman was 2-for-3 with a run batted in for
“Facing the No. 1 offense in the nation, he did a great job,” Canham said of Stutes. “I wouldn’t say that’s the best I’ve seen him - because if Mike’s at his best, no one is touching him but that was a great performance. The first three innings, the first two guys get on and they only score three runs out of that ... that’s tough to do.”
ASU collected six of its hits in the first three innings. The Sun Devils, who entered the game batting .358 as a team, put their first three hitters aboard in the first inning, their first two aboard in the second inning and their first three aboard again in the third inning but scored just one run in the first and two in the second.
“They’re just like any other hitters,” Stutes said. “I mean, they’re all great hitters I’m not trying to say they’re not good hitters. Those guys get up there and rake every single game, I’m not taking anything away from them. But they’re just like any other hitters, you’ve got to attack them. I think I’m a pretty good pitcher and they’re pretty good hitters; you just have to toe the rubber and get after them.”
Going into the bottom of the ninth,
Wong worked the count full, then lined a single to left-centerfield that scored Santschi and moved Kahalehoe to second. Chris Hopkins then grounded a ball just to the left of second base that shortstop Andrew Romine was able to cut off and his throw to first was just in time to get
Leake walked five and struck out seven, but the Sun Devils backed him with a pair of double plays.
“He’s a typical Friday night guy in the Pac-10 he’s good,” Casey said of Leake. “Everybody goes through a tough time in the season, and unfortunately for us, it’s right now,” Casey said. “We have a great ballclub in here; probably the best ballclub in
ASU took the lead for good at 3-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, getting a run-scoring double from Matt Spencer and a run-scoring groundout from Petey Paramore. OSU got within 3-2 in the bottom of the inning when Lissman grounded a two-out, run-scoring single through the left side to score
The Sun Devils had gone in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning on Eric Sogard’s bloop single to left that drove in Tim Smith from second, and ASU then put runners at second and third with one out. But Stutes struck out Spencer swinging and Paramore looking to get out of the inning, then Canham tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the inning as he drove his ninth homer of the year over the rightfield bleachers with two out.
